Can towing a grand cherokee blowout the transmission?

Can towing a grand cherokee blowout the transmission?
My friends 96 grand Cherokee had to be towed. They didnt use a flat bed instead a normal tow truck. If the truck was not put in neutral and towed would it blow out or mess up the transmission?
