If I could do it all over again I would call around until I could find someone to do it for the cheapest price and have them do it. Then again, I'm on time restraints.

I have a 2001 cherokee with a bad evaporator. Can changing it out really be done in a weekend? My hubby and his buddy are both mechanically inclined, and I don't want to shell out $1700 to fix it. Can someone please provide me with the instructions on how to do it and any tips/tricks/do's and donts? It would be such a huge help!
And Welcome to CF!

When you're ready for something to push you over the edge to commit suicide, that will be the time.
By the way, anyone who does this take note; Don't forget that little vaccum line that runs between the heater core and evaporator metal-hoses on the firewall. That's the one that controls the actual cooling/heating **** (middle), and you will have to pull the whole thing out again if you should make it to the end (like I did) before you realize this.

bad smell caused by leaking evaporator?
Hi! I have a 97 Grand Cherokee with a leaking evaporator core (mechanic's guess based on smell combined w/ no cold air). His quote was outrageous ($1900) and I'd like to change it out with my boyfriend's help. Any suggestions?

If anyone could pm me some info on how to change a evap core on my 99 Cherokee sport that would be appreciated. I have a mechanic that would do it for 650$ but I was wanting to see if it would be worth my time for me to do it or pay the mechanic, thanks

Hi,
I am thinking instead of pulling the dash, why can't I cut the firewall?
The hvac box will be exposed. I then just cut the HVAC box as well to get to the evaporator directly. The replacement will be simply to swap in a new one, insulate it, patch the HVAC box with silicone and the firewall with a little soldering. Can this be done? The jeep isn't worth 1000 anyway Unless there is any screw or bolts fixing the evaporator to the HVAC box that cannot be reached when the box is cut
