Default Audio problem in 2004 WJ

Hi,

I've searched for other threads on this problem, but so far haven't found anything. Please forgive me if I've overlooked a previous thread!

2004 WJ Special Edition, with Infinity Gold audio. Problem is a scratchy noise coming from both rear speakers. I took both speakers out and hooked them up in another WJ, and the speakers work fine. So, I figure the scratchy noise is probably a loose/broken wire in either the amp or the head unit.

I was going to replace the head unit with something newer than the factory one I have, but found out the new wire harness would cost more than the head unit I was going to put in, and.. there's a chance that it wouldn't fix the problem! So, before I go putting hundreds of dollars into a new head unit, I figured I'd try to rule out the amp first.

I pulled each plug out of the amp and put them back in, hoping for an easy fix, but no go. I'm not an electrician, and even though I have the wire diagrams from WJJeeps.com, I don't know how to test each wire coming out of the amp to know whether it's bad or not.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Thanks in advance!

Some times the wire binds up in the door hinges. I have had it where my new wiring, though ran through that same rubber tube, became damaged inside that rubber tube.

So I would look there.

you would want to use a multimeter and check each wire for continuity. So from the amp side to the speaker side of each wire for the speakers involved. Once you find the wire with bad continuity you have a better place to start and just need to track those wires and repair or replace them.

Thanks guys, I never thought of checking around the door hinges. Guess I'm gonna have to spring for a multimeter. I have a feeling I'll need it for several things in the future. 1st time Jeep owner, had it for 5 years with no problems, so I never needed any tools! I guess it's time to start my collection. ;-)
