Default Alternator???

1994 Cherokee 4.0. My engine check light is now coming on. The check light code is flashing code #41. Says the alternator (?) is not switching proplerly. Now on my way home from work the last two nights my battery light is coming on. My battery is pretty new. It's still starting alright and my lights are not dim. My question - should I assume that my alternator needs replaced or is there some other things that I should also look at like a relay or something???? Thoughts? Thank you.

take it to AutoZone or a Kragens and have them test it for you, they do it for free. That will tell you for sure whats going on.

That`s part of your answer right there..With a new battery you can probably run a good 30-40 minutes even if the alternator is totally shot..Get a hold of even a cheapie volt meter and put it on the battery terminals..It should read like 12.25 volts with the Jeep off and 13-14 with it running...If it`s still reading 12 when the Jeeps running your alternator ain`t putting out....This is one of the main reasons I swapped out the instrument cluster in my 94 Cherokee to the analog gauge one and got rid of the "dummy lights"..Good luck

The alternator chages thru 2 fuses. If these go out you will not get any charging. Check the fuses in the PDC. You can also use a volt meter to check the alternator to see if it is charging.

Taking it to an auto shop as recommended, will also deternine if the alternator is charging.
