Default all time 4x4 disadvantages (grand cherokee)

I am thinking about buying an all time 4x4 grand cherokee for a toy and was wondering what would be the disadvantages of an all time 4x4. My plan is to put a little lift and some mud tires on it.

Transfer case problems are typical, other than that maybe a little more wear and tear on front end parts.

What kind of transfer case problems? And how hard would it be to make it part time?

To avoid the t-case problems they are talking about get one that is 96 or newer. They redesigned the NP249 and is way less problematic. The only disadvantage to having the all time 4x4 is not haveing 2 wheel drive!

Here is mine. It has a 2.5" KOR BB plus a set of Up Country springs that net me about 3.5-4" of lift. Still have the stock tires on till I can get enough money to buy new ones. Going for a 265-75/16.

I put my stock 97 Laredo through its paces many times over. I have 210k on it. Only parts replaced on it other than your typical maintenance items are a new water pump, radiator, and a new alternator. This has logged more time offroad than my XJ. It was my first Jeep and to this day I am not afraid to take it offroad.

I would say the only down fall to the V8 Grands is the aluminum dana 44 in the rear. Its great for the street but being aluminum it tends to bend so if your going to get into hardcore wheeling, axle swap!

I have a 93 Grand Limited with the 318 v8 and all time 4wd. I bought it with trans issues already, so with that in mind, what are the common T case issues with these? It seems to split between high and low pretty easily, but as it warms up, it really feels like the the trans is slipping. Is this a common issue with the V8 aswell? Im planning to have the trans rebuilt if the problem is there and not the T case, so is there any place to improve on the trans? Can I swap internals from a stronger trans into that casing? I know I can do it in my dakota is why I ask. My dakota has a 47RE in it and the 46RE internals can go in there.

I have had a 97 now for a year and have seen no real disadvantage to having full time 4WD. I just got back from my property in Oregon and the final road to my place is no joke, I hauled a large trailer with a quad and loaded with gear/supplies and made it with no problem. I spun tires going up the final hill and my brother was actually surprised I made it in and out with that trailer.

I do believe it would be harder on gas than a two wheel

Even though your in two wheel drive you still turning the internals on your front axel creating drag. Unless you have lock outs your not going to see much if any difference!

I borrowed my mother in laws 01 grand and that thing got about 10mpg, had tons of power, but cost me $20 just to drive back and forth to work one time....Never wanted a grand after that.

Sounds to me you liked the power too much! Couldn't stay out of the throttle?!
