Default 99 Grand Cherokee has KNOCK in cylinder 4: HOW MUCH IS IT TO FIX THIS, APPROXIMATELY?

1) Rod knock in cylinder 4 by drivers side (closest to firewall)
2) Shorted o2 sensors
3) bad tensioner pully causing belt to slip

Also, not sure if the tensioner pully has to do with my other problem but the jeep will cut off after driving for a few minutes when coming to a complete stop and will not always start right up? Not sure why it does this...

Oh, I am not talking about going to a dealer (I know it would be thousands) but maybe a mom and pop shop or possibly good back yard mechanic....

Any idea?

Thanks

I would throw an engine in it but the engines are $1500 and that is excluding the $700 it would cost to put it in....And I'm hoping fixing the rod knock would be less than a grand? Possible?

You can get and entire rebuilt long block with a warranty from Autozone for $1900 + core.

Not saying you should buy from Autozone or anywhere else specifically, but that's the price range for a full rebuilt warrantied motor.

(And if I'd read your second post, I'd've seen that you already knew that.)

If you can't do the work yourself, at a minimum you're looking at a new crank and a connecting rod for the bad cylinder as well as a full bearing job. Figure an easy grand.

You can get a running boneyard engine for less than 500 bucks and install it your self. A few buddies and a couple cases of beer, you could have it done over the weekend.

Do you have a link cause I looked on car-part.com and these engines are outrageously expensive...Minimum $1500 (excluding warranties and taxes) in my area....

Just got off the phone with the mom and pop shop that has the Jeep...He said that there is no oil pressure and the whole thing needs to be rebuilt which he priced at roughly $1800...

I have $2500 into it because I gave a backyard mechanic $700 to DO NOTHING...

I will have $4500 into it and probably end up selling it for a $500 loss in the end....I like these Jeeps but they are money pits

I love the exterior and interior pics. They really help us figure this out!

The local pick a part in my area sells the engines already pulled for $600, and if you pull the engine it will only be $150. A pretty screaming deal if you ask me.

We have a few pick yourself places but they are all stripped down to nothing. You'd be lucky to find an alternator, let alone the entire motor completely untouched.

Anyways, the shop said $1800 included the bearings but if it needed a new crank or pistons it would be extra, up to $2600! I am at $2500 already so would have to put another $2500 for total cost of $5000...That is not including the shorted o2 sensors or the front bumper...And I would be lucky to get $4,000 for it.

So I sold it (pending) to the shop (son of the owner) for $1250 and I am taking a $1250 loss and the headache is gone...He'll have a real nice Jeep for probably under $2000 since he will be doing all the work himself.

I could part out but I'd rather get $1250 in one handshake then deal with all the craigslist postings, showings, and phone calls to make a little more over the next several months.
