Default 99 4.7L WJ Idle/Driving Issue

Ok,

I have searched the forums and have found several issues relating to mine but not one exactly the same. Here are symptoms:

1. While driving at highway speeds 60+ especially on cruise control suddenly the revs will go up about 200-300.

2. After disconnecting the battery, even for 5-15 minutes, and I begin to drive the Jeep I have engine braking issues for about 10 miles or so. Basically if I'm going 40+ and I let off of the gas the engine brakes itself almost like the torque converter is out.

3. While making a sharp turn backing out of a parking space the Jeep just stalled out.

4. Recently, I've had a really rough idle and at stop lights I've been afraid it would stall out (it did about 2-3 years ago but not since).

I know that the TPS and IAC need to be replaced and/or cleaned but what would something like that have to do with the engine braking? Is the TPS an input to the converter. It could be multiple issues hiding behind one ugly mask but my thoughts are as follows:

1. Bad/dirty IAC and TPS.
2. Bad torque converter solenoid.
3. Fuel pump going out.

Any suggestions on how to go about troubleshooting without just randomly replacing parts? Also, the Jeep is a Limited so it has Quadra-drive.

I'm not experienced with electrical testing at all so if it involves any of that please go baby step by baby step lol.

As far as #1, our '04 WJ w/V8 5-spd auto, (which we bought new and now has 108,000+ miles), did the same thing a couple of years ago. Some times, above 50 MPH, it would shift out of overdrive 5th by itself, but it only went down to overdrive 4th. As you stated this mostly happened when using cruise control. We took it to the dealer as it was still under warranty. They reflashed the Transmission Control Module, and the problem went away, and hasn't reoccurred.
You can check the system for any stored trouble/fault codes as follows: http://www.wjjeeps.com/faultcodes.htm#ERASE
