Question 97 Grand Cherokee New Owner Question

Hi, I am new to jeeps and new to this forum. My new jeep has been sitting for a while until I could get some money to fix it up well yesterday I went to pick it up from my shop and the drivers side carpet had a puddle in it. Every where else was fine? I took a look at the sunroof and it seems like it may be coming from there, the seal is kind of worn but not too bad and the roof doesn't want to stay flush with the jeep, it seems to be set down a little bit like it is loose? Just looking for some insight? Let me know thanks!!!!

Is it a factory sunroof or a pop up style? A factory sunroof has four drains built into it, one at each corner. Those drains will often get plugged with dirt and junk and the water will back up and make its way inside the vehicle. The glass can also be adjusted so it will sit flush, but even if it sits flush water is still be able to get past it. A sunroof is just a controlled water leak as long as the drains are clean.

It is factory installed. I cleaned the drains but my issue now is it will not sit flush like you described, it sits flush but it will slowly creep down or a light tap will let it drop. how do you adjust the sun roof? Detailed instructions please.. Thanks!! Again

i highly doubt its the sunroof. look through the write-ups page on the homepage of the forum. and youll see its water leaks in from the HVAC system i believe. mine has the same issue im just being lazy and havent went and got the tubing...

HVAC water leaks are mainly on the passenger side floor. There should be screws at each corner of the glass with the screw head facing the inside of the vehicle, they will be in a slotted hole for them to move up and down. Loosen the screws and push up on the glass and then tighten the screws. Make sure the sunroof still functions after the adjustment. Mine leaked and had a lot of broken track parts. I adjusted mine for the best fit and sealed around the mating surface of the seal with some black RTV and then pulled the fuse, I'm never going to use the sunroof again. I hate sunroofs anyway, too much noise and trouble for ten minutes of fun.

Ok I will take a look at that later the track and everything is ok If I can't get the leak to stop which I will find out soon as we are expecting rain later this evening I will probably fit it snug and do what you did and be done with it. I have a little more work to do before it can be my daily driver first thing is first it needs to stop leaking then I got a power steering pump and everything else is little after that.. O one more of topic question I have the rear glass on the hatch that supposedly opens it has handle and the two pistons but I can not for the life of me figure out how it opens??? I see no button or anything. I figured if it didn't open there would not be pistons on he glass or hinges?? Pix please and I will keep you all updated on my situations

Ok so we have had a decent amount of rain here the last couple days, I tightened up the sun roof but I found that the leak is coming in from the the front drivers side of the sun roof? I thought I cleaned the drain unless it's backed up again any ideas on how to clean it properly? Or any ideas thanks

I just had this same issue. We got a ton of rain today, and on the way to work I notice standing water on the passenger floor. I have a sunroof as well, but unsure if it's that or the HVAC drain. Keep us posted on what you find,as I can't work on mine for a couple of days.

Run some wire down the drain tubes to break up and clear any crud that may be in the tubes.

I will run some wire down there in the morning if I get the chance I will clean all the drains and re adjust the sun roof if needed...

Monkeybutt yours is probably the HVAC drain leaking onto your passenger side floor. I have it on the drivers side and I could see the rain drip inside while sitting in there and it would run of the leather into the drivers door. Since we have had a decent amount of rain I was able to rule out other issues as the carpet stays dry. My jeep is still sitting bc I bought it cheap and it needs some things before I can drive it daily as I should be done before Xmas hopefully. Any way I will keep everyone posted

I have a pdf FSM for the '97 ZJ that I sold, and I looked at the sunroof drain pics/schematics, but my printer is down. The front drains run from the front corners of the sunroof drain channel, then each side runs down inside the A pillars, all the way down past the bottom of the door openings, then I can't tell if it stops in the rocker or behind the fenders, but it's somewhere below the hinge bolts at the bottom. The rear drains leave the corners of the drain channel, then runs down the C pillars behind the rear doors, over the rear inner fenders, then down into 2 plugs/adapters that probably exit through the floor, but it doesn't show. Sorry I can't be more specific, or print this out, but I hope it's of some help.

I am at a loss here I have some condensation on the inside of the sun roof,
I want to re seal the whole thing but apparently they only sell the glass with the seals, so I am looking for a vehicle with a similar size roof and I think I am going to remove the sun roof and re weather strip it, I will do a write up if I can find anything that will work. Any ideas? What kind of wire to put down the drain pipe? I don't want to break the line.

Mechanics wire is flexable and comes on a roll that is sold at almost any auto parts store. It's a good thing to keep on hand for emergency trail side repairs.

Bringing this back up. We've had a steady rain here for tha last 12hrs,go out and check the Jeep and sure enough, water on passenger side floor. So it's probably the sunroof drain. Herein lies my problem. The sunroof is sketchy, sometimes it works sometimes it don't.
