Default 94 zj transfer case swap

I'm new to jeeps so this maybe a stupid question, but can i swap np231 or 242 on to my 46rh tranny? originally i have the 249 and its gonna suck for wheelin. I was wondering if there was going to be input shaft spline problem? and does anybody have opinions on which case is better? strength, aftermarket parts, sye kits etc. my zj is NOT going to be a trailer queen but I am building for off road abuse. thanks Rich.

I'v read up on this as i want a 242 in my wifes ZJ which currently has a 249 as well.

You'll need to swap the 249 input gear into the new transfer case in most cases. IIRC if you get a 242 that was from a ZJ it's a bolt in... thats IIRC, i could be wrong. At either rate you'll have the input you need within the 249, it's just gonna be some work.
