Default 4RE trans fluid change and band adjustment questions

I am working through my "new" 265,000 mile 96 Gnd Ltd 5.2 V8 with a group IV trailer tow package and want to change the trans fluid and check band adjustment because it hesitates to shift into drive when first started, and because I don't know its maintenance history or what fluid is in the trans now.

I searched the archives and found a link to a writeup for dodge truck transmissions at http://dieseldatabase.com/24v-transm...ustment/?id=55

My build list shows the trans as" DGWS 4-Spd. Automatic 4RE Transmission". Is this writeup applicable to this trans and are the specs listed for 96 the correct adjustments for this trans?
1996
– Front Band – tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 2-7/8 turns
– Rear Band – tighten to 72 in-lb, back off 2 turns

I read that ATF+4 is the fluid to use and the total capacity is 21.5 pints; how much should I have on hand for a drain, filter change, and refill?

Someone mentioned "the bucket trick" for a complete fluid change; Is there a way a driveway mechanic to do a complete fluid change, or should I just let it go at drain and refill?

The reviews seem to be 50/50 on whether to change fluid at all on a high mile ZJ, but it seems best to me to err on the side of maintenance since I expect to do some towing.

I posted in your other thread but Ill answer this one as well.
your band adjustment looks fine. But thats not the problem.
The only time a band is applied in a 44/46re trans is second gear, reverse, or manual low.
The delay is from the converter draining back. The chrysler units do not pump fluid in park. so when they sit they drain back, when you put it in gear there is not enough fluid in the converter to drive it, so the delay is the time it takes to fill the converter.
Start it and let it run in neutral for a few seconds and it should go right into gear.
