(1) I have just purchased (but haven't titled it yet) a (FEB) 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Laredo) I6 4.0 with the 42RE (Selec-Trac). I don't know what was done exactly to it from previous owners and don't have any type of owners manual!!! I was wondering what would be a good Transmission fluid to use in it?? I've heard that MOPAR is very picky on their parts, electronics, fluids. Note the Jeep has 218,784 miles on it. When I drained the old Trans fluid, it didn't look to bad at all as it wasn't black, no shavings etc...! I have been told to use the old fluid and replace the filter. There was only 4quarts that I was able to save from it so needing to replenish to its original amount. Should I use some kind of additive 1 qt also, or no?
(2) Now how about my Transfer Case Fluid? I believe I have the New Process 242-J in it with the long cast aluminum shaft instead of the rubber boot looking shaft. And it has the U-Joint instead of the Viscous Coupler. What good fluid is to be used for this Transfer Case??Would you know if someone may have worked on this Transfer Case?

Welcome to the forum.
When I rebuilt my 46RH transmission, I used the specified Mopar ATF+4 Fluid, but any ATF+4 will work in your transmission.
Same fluid for transfer case.
No additives required or suggested.

Thanks for your opinion. You must have the 5.2 liter, yes, no? Just received an owner's manual for the 93'Jeep now. It states: It is important that proper lubricant is used in the transmission. MOPAR ATF PLUS (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID TYPE 7176) or equivalent should be used. Fluids of the type labeled DEXTRON II Automatic Transmission Fluid should be used only if the recommended fluid is not available. I heard ppl say to stay away from the DEXTRON products. Was reading that ATF + 4 can be used if old stuff being ATF III was used from the factory, so to speak. So, what's the differences between the ATF + 4 fluid and the MOPAR ATF PLUS Type 7176?
Transfer Case Fluid: MOPAR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID or equivalent labeled DEXTRON II or MERCON
Any other thoughts on this info I have given?
Really appreciate your opinions or anyone that deals with situations like this.
