Default 2WD vs 4WD Comparison

Hello-

I am thinking of getting a 2002 Limited JGC. I live in in Illinois so I have to deal with snow. I have always liked the smart track systems because I never knew if the AWD was on or not. Anyone have anything to say about performance differences between 2WD and AWD? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks-
Stephen

Well, if you are talking true 2 wheel drive vs. AWD, then it's no contest. The AWD is by far the better choice for foul driving conditions. AWD vehicles will have a device in the transfer case that will allow a bit of slip between the front and rear axles. 4WD vehicles split the power 50/50 between the front and rear axles. 2WD vehicles only drive from 1 axle, front or rear, AKA front wheel drive, or rear wheel drive. HTH!!

I know that the AWD or 4WD is obviously better, but I am looking to spend less money and there is at least a 1800 difference in the vehicles I am looking at. I was kinda hoping if anyone knew how the 2WD did in foul weather--as compared to a front whell drive suv or car or awd suv.

Thanks!

Not good, light vehicle, rear wheel drive...it will get you there....maybe?? In foul weather, 4WD/AWD is best, front wheel is 2nd best, and rear wheel drive does the worst. HTH!!

If you're going to get a Grand Cherokee, then you really should get an AWD or 4WD one. Just like a 2WD truck, if you don't have weight in the back of it, you will slip and slide around with just 2WD...If you can afford it, go for the AWD one.
