Default 249 information please

i know CRAP about the 249... but my buddys dad has a 94 I6 ZJ 4x4 sitting in his field that was left there by another guy who blew the motor/ killed the tranny... i wanted to get the transfer case from it and front axle for my MJ 4x4 swap... its all free... its also got thick metal gas tank skid and transfer case skid too that i might grab just to re-sell... but the rest is trashed... aka... rolled on purpose, shot up with rifles/shotguns, all glass and sheetmetal is busted... yatta yatta... lol... field parties in GA are fun

but all i can find is people swapping the 249 with the 242 or 231... and not why... id like to know before i stick it in the jeep... or if i guess... lol... may just not be worth it... may only get the front axle and skids...

I would look at a different year 249. The 93-95s are known for the VC failing on them. The 96-98s fixed this issue. Out of the 231,242, and 249, it has the highest tourque rating. It is a full time 4 wheel drive case. No 2 wheel selection only 4 hi and 4 lo.

"The NP229-based system New Process Gear was replaced with a New Venture Gear NV249-based chain-driven system in 1996.

The NP249/NV249 utilizes a "Viscous Coupler" to determine power transfer between the front and rear axles. The goal of this device is to provide smooth and efficient 4WD operation on dry surfaces — if a differential in speed occurs between the axles, heat buildup in the viscous coupler transfers power to the slower axle, providing some traction in off road conditions.
1993-1995 NP249 transfer cases used the viscous coupler to transfer power in both high and low ranges.
1996-1998 NV249 transfer cases had a low-lock capability, meaning a hard gear transferred power in 4LO (front and rear drive shafts are locked at same speed in low range). Low Range ratio
2.72:1."

aahh... yeah thats what i read was going out in them alot... i can get 231s pretty cheap but this one would have just been free... and im not big on all time 4x4 like most everyone else dont... so ill just grab the front axle as its geared the same as my MJ rear... well... maybe... now that i think about it it should be a LP D30... so maybe i wont get it either... lol... i guess for free it wont matter since it wont be offroad...
