Unhappy 2001 GC intermittent engine cut out

Over the past few months, the engine in my 2001 GC, (4.0L, 235,000 mi) has just cut out while driving- no warning, stutter or anything, like the key was turned off. Has happened 4-5 times now, and only lasted a few seconds, the motor started again because I was doing > 30 mph.
But twice, a full shut down- had to pull over, stop and crank the engine a few times while in park- then it starts and drives like nothings happened. All the gauges read normal. Just happened this afternoon. The only thing I noticed this time was while cranking, the ammeter showed deep into the negative side, but read just fine and normal once the engine started.
I'm thinking a ground problem somewhere, Has this happened to anyone else?
FWIW, the car runs and drive fine otherwise, I mostly use it around town.
