Exclamation 2000 GC out of gas? Won't start

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee - I think I may have been robbed of 3/4 tank of gas - there were no gas leaks on the ground - but fuel gage shows tank is below empty - the monitor says I have 260 miles before empty- I went and got a gallon of gas - and the gage rose slightly - however it will not start - it just cranks and cranks - no fire -
is this a common fuse problem or something? Please help ASAP
thanks
Steff

Default I have checked the following

I took the relay switch out and had it teseted - the guy said it had continuity - and wasn't sure if it was working - so to try the ac relay as they were the same relay switches - I did this and it did not work - my brother helped me 'shake' the car - and it sounds as though my 3/4 tank of gas is still there - so not sure what to do next - isn't there some sort of self healing mojo I can do to this car - it was running fine before I parked it - another friend said that the fuel injector or fuel pump should make a whirring sound - but he did not hear that - and I have never heard any sort of noise like that -

Cool

Does the fuel pump relay "click" when you turn the key on? You will need to check and see if you have any engine codes stored in the computor.

Cool

If you don't have a scanner or access to one....You can get the codes through the odometer screen. Turn the ignition key on (to acc) then off three times and any codes stored in memory will display on the electronic odometer dispaly on the dash.

later GC's hae been known to have bad fuel level gauges/sensors. try calling your local dealer service dept and see if there is a TSB " Technical Service Bulletin" on the fuel gauge. If so I think they might replace it for free.

Good luck!

They don't do TSB's for free. You can find them here.. http://wjjeeps.com/tsb.htm

this works, believe me. It saved my bacon a month ago and saved me from wasting $$ on parts I did not need. You need to find a list of fault codes and then match any code you might have appear when you do this "key-trick" and voila - problem isolated. Also, I think the fuel pump is in the gas tank - IIRC - so maybe that's why you can't hear it. My pump is fine and I can't remember ever hearing it run. Soimeone here should be able to fwd you a list of the fault codes. I had it and saved it but my PC crashed 2 weeks ago and I am on a new computer now, missing all my saved stuff.
