1998 Laredo, Not going into third, barely goes into reverse

1998 Laredo, Not going into third, barely goes into reverse
I don't know much about these Jeeps so before I assume I need a new transmission figured I'd let you know what's happened.
It's a 1998 Jeep Lerado Cherokee. They come with the 42RE transmission correct? It will not shift into from what I can tell would be the third gear. Also when I put it into reverse I press the gas and it will sometimes work. When reverse gear does work it catches horribly and chirps the tires.
So I was thinking about getting a new or refurbished transmission unless there is something I can check. Also any good online transmission places I can buy from? Thanks for any help.
