Default 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0l with replacement ecu.

I have replaced the ecu but the engine still will not start. Does the ecu have to be programmed to the Jeep in order for it to work or did I end up getting another dud. I figured the only reason to get the ecu flashed was so that the vin matches. This ECU supposedly came out of another Jeep with all of the same drive train and engine so that part should match.

If the ECU is like my 2000 GC then it has to recognise the chip imbedded in the key via the SKIM module in order to start and run. Does it start then shut down within 2 seconds?

the ECU will have to be reflashed, with your VIN # and current mileage before it will work. any Jeep/Chrysler dealer should be able to do it.
