1996 JGC Dies When I Stop
My 1996 JGC 4.0 I-6 186,xxx miles had a random, occasional miss while driving. I had cel codes read a couple months ago at parts store and was told it was multiple cylinder misfire, on all cylinders. Had already replaced crankshaft sensor, aftermarket brand, prior to this. Had tune up done at dealership, because they said my tune up was wrong, wasn't their plugs and wires?? I cleaned and hose clamped the pcm plugs very tight. Then a few weeks later it began to randomly, occasionally die when I come to a complete stop. If I'm in reverse and stop, it dies when I shift to drive. If I'm driving, it doesn't matter if I stop quick or ease into a stop. Since this problem began I have cleaned injectors, with new o rings. Replaced tps, and cleaned every sensor and plug I can find. Still same problem. Seems to die more often at operating temp, but does also die at first shift into drive after startup. Also, after driving for 15-20 min or more, when i end my trip and shift to park, the engine will somtimes rev to 1200-1400 rpm's and idle there until i tap the throttle, then it will idle back down to the normal 500 rpm's or so.. This doesnt always happen, just sometimes. Any help will be appreciated.. Forgot to metion that jeep also occasionally sputters 1/2-1 seconds from time to time while i am driving.

Do you know if they cleaned the throttle body? This should be part of a modern tune-up, but is often not done. idle is controlled by a little actuator on the side of the throttle body called an ISC or IAC (idle air control) motor. It manages a variable vacuum leak to control the idle. Usually you can clean the throttle plate with an old toothbrush and some carburetor cleaner. Get the back side and around the edges real good while holding it open. if that alone doesn't straighten it out, you may have to remove the IAC and clean or replace it also.

Also, forgot to mention that i replaced fuel filter and ignition coil when cleaned injectors... Today i checked the throttle body and it is very clean, so im guessing they cleaned it when i got the tune up, but i touched it up since i was in there. Pulled the distributor cap and every thing in there looks clean. I also pulled the IAC and cleaned it, i noticed that the pin and plug connector for the bottom, or yellow, wire had corrosion on them, oxidation or something. I scraped them and cleaned them as good as i could get them and went for a drive. It still had a random miss but did not even try to die for about 40 min. I did all the things that usually makes it die; stop and go, reverse then stop and shift to drive, multiple stops, it was great.. And then,, i decided to stop and shut it off for a minute. Started right back up, reversed out of the parking space, shifted to drive and it happened.. As i drove it back home some of the stops caused it to die. In my driveway i backed up a few times and when i shifted back to drive, it died everytime. Not sure if this plays a role in my problem, but i did notice that on occasion my oil pressure guage will drop to zero when i stop but will go right back to 40 when i throttle or if i shift to neutral. This doesnt happen in sync with the dying. Sometimes it will drop and go back up with no engine stall, and sometimes the engine dies and the oil pressure is running at normal when it does. Maybe i should replace the IAC and the plug because of the corrosion on that bottom pin? So confused!!

What to replace next?
Cleaned the IAC, but should we replace it since the jeep is still acting up?We are leaning towards replacing the computer if this does not fix it. Any suggestions. We are at a loss. Thanks for any help
