I just finished the admin and the introduction since I am new at this forum. Now I try my first question or some general information about my plans.
I shopped the owners manual, the Haynes Repair Manual and the workshop manuals for this model. Any hint of good repair literature is most welcome.
Mechanical-, technical-, electrical-wise and regarding the engine and metal-work I don't expect too much work. Nevertheless the interior and the exterior will have some challenges. This is what I found and how I want to fix it:
- paint blind / sun burnt -- polishing all around after an intensive car wash
- seals hard / broken all around -- replacing seals, weatherstripping and window guides
- headliner sagging -- dismantle the headliner and re-glew or replace the headliner on the board -- related to that the receiver of the remote lock has to be repaired (the black plastic cover is missing) and re-set with some new remote switch (none given to me)
- seats (passenger and driver) are torn and worn -- replace the leather/textile combination cover on both sides, backrest and seat each
- carpet cleaning / replacement
- cruise control switch w/o function -- repair/replace the cruise control switch
- dashboard clock w/o function -- repair/replace dashboard clock
- aftermarket radio -- replace with an OE Jeep radio (no matter which)
- A/C w/o function (no refrigerant) -- will get serviced / filled
- automatic antenna missing (somebody broke off the antenna, but motor still trying to slide antenna up and down each time I start/stop the engine) -- replace with an automatic antenna rod
- fake wood paneling (missing on the front left fender, worn and torn on other spots, frames are all there but sun-burnt) -- fake wood paneling replacement (all or just the fender) -- repair or replace the frames
--- Parts missing / defect (including the above) ---
headliner tan
remote lock receiver cover (black plastic cap)
remote lock sender
sun visor joints
seat cover (leather-textile combination OE) LH and RH front seats
carpet set tan
dashboard clock (insert)
OE Jeep radio
automatic antenna rod
fake wood panelling
fake wood panelling frames
front blinker glasses (matching the grille lines)
trailer hitch pin (assembly is there)
Jeep aluminum wheels (mine are corroded)
tinted windscreen with a blue wedge (mine has multiple chips)
roof sliders seals
roof rack seals
window seals all around
window guides all four doors
--- Parts I'd like to add ---
cargo area cover retractable (with spare tire on the left) plus brackets (all tan)
hidden winch in the front bumper
front fog lights
That's more than enough for the first thread! Thank you very much if you read up to this point. If there's any point where you have a good tip or link or even sources for parts, I'd greatly appreciate you sharing with me. I'll start one or more threads in the parts search area.
I'll take some pictures of the problem areas I mentioned and post it here asap.
- dried and broken seals, weatherstripping, window guides (that is an example for the rubber condition almost all around the car) - all will be replaced.
That picture also shows the torn and worn front seat covers. Does anybody know a source for them stock/original/OEM? I spoke to my saddler but he refused to deliver the stitching accordingly. So I'm still on the hunt for a good pair of OEM covers in tan (or find a saddler who can reproduce the "Limited" stitching).
paint blind / burnt: cleaning, polishing, detailing
That picture also shows the roof rack and skid strips - both have to be reassembled with fresh rubber insulations and skid strip inserts.
interior headliner sagging: disassemble headliner and re-glew or replace.
related to the headliner is the keyless entry system receiver bracket - there's the black cover missing (#5):

thats IR filtering plastic. If you can't find one you may be able to diy vacuum form one to fit.
a short follow up: This week I disassembled the headliner (got almost crazy about those retainers...) and brought it to my saddler. Some things are better taken care of by the professionals Eventhough he struggled a bit matching the right color. But in the end I think we found a good compromise. I just learned that I didn't take a picture yet - I'll attach that later.
Harder will be the seat covers. These are special (again) with the leather-cord textile - mix. Not enough, combined with a carpet part in the bottom and the "Limited" stitching on the upper back seat. We'll see...
Unexpected obstacle developed by the replacement of the sealed beams. I have to replace them with halogen bulbs with integrated position light (with "E"-markings on the lens - German law...). I can't get a hand on them in maximum size 150x90mm (6x3,6"))!

Have a nice sunday!

If you're going for an exact match on the seats, or at least really close, I'd take it to your local automotive upholstery place and they can / should be able to produce something close. The downside is there's some amount of labor involved and each seat isn't going to be cheap.
Are the ones you have now beyond salvageable by a good detailer?
Actually, I am not bad in detailing myself. I'll definitely try to get them better. But the drivers seat is really in a bad shape:
I was able to source a complete leather seat cover without the cord-textile inserts. I really want to keep OEM style. So I'll try to source the cord-textile and then either the saddler fits it into the existing leather cover or he'll build it new completely. Either way these seats are going to cost me almost a grand per seat.

So, this is the headliner (no headliner). The saddler didn't have a matching textile there, too. But he came close - so I'm happy and looking forward to pick it up next week and assemble it again. All the metal looks very nice everywhere I dissasemble something which covers the metal. It looks like new.
No cord inserts found so far for the seats though.
My OEM radio just arrived. But I might made a mistake. I thought it's smart to get just a radio (because tape deck is not working anyways) - but, what do you think / know?: Can I connect it with all my speakers. Since I have the limited trim I have 8 speakers. Base trim was only 2 speakers...
Does anybody get a hand on the handhold bolt covers?:
....and one of the other side:
Does anybody get a hand on a pair of fob set (sender and receiver) to replace for the remote lock? Or can I buy just a sender and get it "learning" my existing system?
...and as you see the cover is missing, too - maybe I have the luck and somebody has it.
One last question for today: Does anybody have a link to an exterior and interior paint chart? I'm looking for the paint code for interior "tan" color. Have to touch up some parts (like the broken sun visor clip, where I could only source a black replacement). Is there something like an interior trim chart where I could find the name of the seat cover fabric insert from the 1988 Wagoneer?
