Well, unfortunately it's on the back burner for now as I'm back in college. I pulled the plugs and it seems that it's burning oil. I am wondering if poor compression would cause it to run rough or it's something I did. I figure the PO probably didn't drive it running this rough so this is a new problem. I have run out of ideas as to what could be wrong. I am contemplating going home for a long weekend and tearing the engine down and sending it to the machine shop to start the rebuild process. Maybe even a stroker. If I could get it to run ok now I drive it now and push the rebuild out to summer when I have more time. If I try and do it now then I could get it going thanksgiving week.

Just an update, hopefully lift coming in the spring. About a month ago I found another 96 that was all rusted out but good engine so I am using that as a donor. I swapped the engines out and everything has been going good. I fixed the heavy rust in the floor in the back, replaced a few bulbs and it passed inspection. Ive got a few hundred miles on it now without any major problems. Just a couple brake line replacements. So far I'm into this about $1100 and the xj runs great now. I'm looking at an OME lift coming up later this spring. Thanks to those who have helped with suggestions, advise, and knowledge to help me get this far.

Just a few small updates. I redid the headliner, put in a new head unit, and put some 6.25 Infinity speakers in the rear speaker bar. I still need to cover it with fabric or bedliner or something. I also sanded down the rust on the windshield wiper arms and painted them. I also replaced the rear brakes, wheel cylinders, drums, shoes, lines, and all. Looks like I'll be getting an old man emu lift mid may and adding an inch or so to make it 3" with some 31s.

Blaupunkt San Fransisco 310
Infinity 6.25"
The XJ I bought and took the drive train from

I like your Jeep's purpose. Mine is a similar purpose and zombie survival. The color is perfect for it. I've never seen that color before, just the dark "forest green" that was available in 96.

I had the alternator go out on me the other day. I pulled one from my donor jeep and replaced it. I couldn't believe it, I made it an hour and a half only to have the XJ die on me 100 yards from the house.
On to better news, parts for the lift have begun to be ordered. I have the following plans:
2.75" OME Leaf springs CS033RB
Rustys 3" coils
Dukie Quick Disconnects
OME shocks, waiting for the lift to go on to decide which size
Cragar steelies 15X7 4.5" backspacing
31-10.5-15 ATs, probably Firestone Destinations

Well, parts for the lift have started to roll in along with some other things I need to take care of when I get back from school. Namely an oil change, front pinion seal, and new copper plugs. Heres what Ive got so far:
-Bushings
-Coils
-Rear Bumpstops
-Ubolts
-Disconnects
-Wheels center caps
I'm told leaf springs will ship tomorrow and I'm also waiting on 4.5" backspace Cragar wheels and IRO hack and tap to ship. I've decided to wait until I get the XJ sitting at ride height to find out what kind of bumpstopping I need, and more importantly what length shocks to get. After talking with ARB I found these specs on their OME shocks for those who might want to know (in inches).
Front:
60052 13.54-22.2
60052L 15.4-26.7
Rear:
60053 13.3-22
60053L 14.4-24.5
