Default jeep??? 4x4?

Ok so when i was under my jeep today taken a look i noticed the t case looked like someone had done work on it befor.so i took it for a drive and well i tryed to engage the 4 wheel high and i herd it shifting around, but the light didnt come on.also i tryed to put it into 4wheel low i couldnt i had to put the jeep in neutral then 4 low i figure the light is out.Is there anyway i can figure out what work has been done on the t case? or is there a way to figure out if the 4x4 works?

Put jack stands on all 4 corners with the jeep in 4WD and w/ it running and in drive hit the gas. See if all for turn. LOL don't do that it's not safe..

I stop, put the trans in neutral and then engage the transfer case, pretty sure thats how its suppose to be done otherwise its like changing gears in a manual car with out using the clutch.
