project flipper!!

Hey y'all!! So i rolled my xj last weekend and so im rebuilding her now. I plan on chopping the top, full dom roll cage, partial engine rebuild, replacing the leaf springs, hopefully put in my gc springs for about an inch more lift (i only.have 2" bb right now :/ ) also somehow i want to make bed side tool/storage boxes like in the new ram trucks, a spare tire carrier, hopefully do a 'mini tub' on the rear fenders i think it's called, and when its done i want to use aluminum diamond plate on my bed area.

I have a two door, so its gonna be kinda tight but im leaving room behind the front seats for two small seats im back that face towards each other. Like in crew cab trucks.

Another thing is, hopefully when i get the money, im also going to put in 5 point harness seats and use my middle cross bar of the cage as my harness post. I don't know how many pictures ill be able to get up because im doin this off of my phone but ill try to do as many as i.can!

let me know what you all think, questions, comments, whatever you want to say is welcome! im always ears for tryin to learn from others on here.

Thanks for lookin!

bmikes 08-07-2012 12:44 PM

Me and my buddy are making it together. He's got a tube bender and some other equipment at his shop so we're working there

bmikes 08-08-2012 01:13 PM

Day two of the cage build! Yesterday we.got all the pieces cut out and i bent all the ones that needed to.be bent. So now we're tacking it all in and making little adjustments, then we'll finish burnin her in :)

Well... Im frustrated :/ we got the back end of the cage done. And i really like how the back end of the cage turned out. But the front we were having problems getting stuff lined up, my bends were right a bunch a stuff wasn't right. So we decided to quit for the day and get back at it some other time.. But there's like $180 worth of dom that's wasted :/

Alright, well i got my tail lights all wired up again! The last two days before work i took apart the wiring harness that runs to the back and go rid of all the wires i don't need anymore, like for the wiper motor and stuff. And when i chopped the top i accidently cut the wires that lead to the passenger side tail light so i had to splice those wires in again. But instead of running them right across the 'tailgate' area, i sliced them further back in the wiring where the back seat used to be!

I got a rear view mirror on today, (since i don't even know where mine want when i rolled it) and then went to the jy and got a drivers mirror!

So now with my lights and mirrors im finally street legal again! :) so i drove her to work today :)

i got to work about 30 minutes early so i also sliced in a little lightbulb to illuminate my rear license plate at night :)

Ps, this little light is definitely not permanent, its just for a couple days. But for like 15 minutes of work i don't think its half bad if it keeps me from getting pulled over :)

I got a little done today, welded the pad ( 'c' pillar) feet to the floor. Tomorrow ill work on the frame stiffeners and tying those feet to it

bmikes 08-12-2012 04:03 PM

Oh, and just a tip for anyone reading, the fill plug on the ax-15 is a 24mm. it took me forever to find the right wrench/socket for it. I ended up using a 24mm socket, cause i don't have that size wrench :/

fitrider250 08-15-2012 11:27 PM

Hey so if i wer to build my own cage someday. wear do u mount it and weld it?? I never really under stood how to mount a cage to Ur body!?!?

Tryin to weld 18ga sheet metal onto the body metal sucks!!

Attachment 140255

These are my sheet metal benders. I tried harbor fright ones but they can't.bend 18 ga... Maybe 24! :p but anyways, they are old horse shoe nail clippers! I ground down the point where they.came together and welded in two pieces of 3/8 stock i had around. They work real good!

Dagostino480 08-28-2012 01:13 AM

the mid section of the cage, is that bar high enough to attach a 5point harness to?

bmikes 08-28-2012 10:43 AM

No, that bar is all the way.behind the back seat. One i get the money to buy the seats ill fit them in and make a bar for.the harnesses

More pictures from today!

fitrider250 08-29-2012 01:40 AM

so u just weld the tubing to the body pretty much?? any suppors or any thing??

bmikes 08-29-2012 10:35 AM

Im goin to get unibody supports and then make elbows that go from the stiffeners to where the tubes are, and.then sandwich the unibody with plates. my main focus right now is to get.it all sealed up and waterproof though, they say its supposed to rain soon and so i don't really want it to ruin my project ya know? but ya, i definitely plan on tying it into the unibody frame

fitrider250 08-29-2012 03:02 PM

ok cool. yea cant wair to see it done!!

Thanks man!! I'm at a delinma right now though:/

fitrider250 08-30-2012 10:06 AM

and whats that?

bmikes 08-30-2012 10:38 AM

I was kinda puzzled on how I was goin.to attach my bottom piece of sheet metal that is the back of my bed to th.cross.bar on my roll cage. But after I took a step away from it for a couple hours I came back and decided to just.do little welds spaced out! And then last.night I.got part of the roof.folded down too!

The app isnt working right now but I'll upload some pics in a little bit!

Each one of them three triangles will have a plexi glass window in it :) and I'm.using a marine cauking type stuff to seal it. Ill try that and if it don't work ill just try something else!

Does anybody have any suggestions on the type of bedliner I should use in the back??

wiggles 08-31-2012 02:39 PM

You should use a soft window that you can snap in like a Stanford soft top window
And use rustoleum bed coat, its great stuff!
