Soooo...single digits and -15 windchill this morning. Jeep wouldn't turn over again with the new battery. WTF.
Hit the starter with a hammer and it started right up.
Sooooo...may not have needed to exchange the battery for a new one after all. Evidently my starter just hates extreme cold...

it doesn't crank slow, it just doesn't crank at all - it acts like it's locked up and just clicks

Driveshaft was clicking and squeaking, so rebuild was in order...
Tore apart the cv joint, removing the outer joint first, then the cv ball yoke, then the inner joint

All broken down. Ignore the metal ring - I ordered a new dust shield and thought I needed to reuse the ring from it.

Pile of used parts. I chose to rebuild the centering ball assembly instead of ordering a new yoke and ball. Getting the old race out required some...persuasion.

New joints. I chose to use Spicer Life joints in this end so I never have to take it apart again. I wanted the non-greasable joints but they sent me these 1310-1x joints instead. With a grease fitting in the cap. No biggie as these are a more expensive joint and having the fitting in the cap instead of the cross means they'll be easy to keep greased.

No photos of the final product but install was reverse of removal. Install the outer joint first (don't forget to put the centering yoke behind it like I did the first time). Installing this joint first means its easier to hold the spring loaded centering ball and yoke in place to install the inner joint.
Also warrentied out my starter and replaced it. Hopefully I'll have no more starting issues for a while

Did you do the slip yoke part of the shaft too? One of mine won't hold hardly any grease... I believe the grease able joints with a fitting on each cap are stronger too because of a bigger trunion..?

I replaced the slip yoke end joint a few months back so it didn't need it again. I did not replace any portion of the slip yoke itself.
Grease joint in the cap means no loss of strength in the trunion due to a hole for the zerk yes.

Bear with me - i'm slowly going though and updating the photo links to uploads on CF instead of photobucket since it keeps maxing out on me.
There are some posts that I can't updates due to the 5 attachment restriction so those will have to stay on photobucket but hopefully moving most of them over to CF will cut down on my bandwidth usage and eliminate the overload problem.

LOL. Slowly using my xmas bonus for stuff i've been putting off, and some toys along the way. The engine brackets are the 2nd most expensive single purchase i've made for my truck (first being wheels and tires), but I seriously NEED them to to keep the issue from happening a 4th time.
