We used the frontmost and rear most exposed head bolts by putting a loop of chain over them and putting a nut over the remaining threads. It worked pretty well except that it tilted the engine about 10° making it difficult to attach it to the engine to the stand. We took the mounting plate off the stand and attached it to the engine first, then picked the stand up and finangled the plate back in. We need some longer bolts to hold the plate to the engine, but after that it should be good.
We need to find a spot to keep the black one before we can proceed much further

Got the battery out and most of the radiator, destroyed the upper tranny hard line and did some damage to the area of the radiator where the lower line attaches because I thought it was a similar fitting as the upper one... hopefully nothing irreplaceable.

Got a bunch done on the black guy, well have to swap the ps pumps so we can use the bracket from the black one, they're different for some reason. Also were swapping the ac units so we don't have to deal with charging and discharging and all that fun stuff. Swap should officially be underway sometime tomorrow. The manifolds are going to come off the black one till we get our apn header in on Tuesday. That will give us time to pull the axles, do the pinion seals and hopefully paint them before they go in. I'm getting very excited!

Worked on em all day today! Pinion seals are done, engine and transmission are within the cavity of the red one, just need to be sinched down in place with their respective mounts. Transfered the 4x4 shifter to the red, but we need to get a brushplate/indicator for it because of the different styles. Gonna be tough because it needs to be for a 242 case. Hopefully I can see how they do the lighting in there as well.
Work and school everyday this week, progress will be slow.
Couldn't get a pic post swap because it got dark. New air ratchet made easy work of the frame side suspension components and the steering box spacers, which we swapped as well, the black had a solid steel one that used an extra hole. Getting super pumped! Can't wait to finish this thing and wheel it!

Transmission mount bolt got stuck
Double nut wouldn't hold enough to break it free, added WD and heat
Still no joy
Soaked it over night
Not moving
So brought out the big guns, fully prepared to snap it off and have to drill it out.
Lots of liquid wrench, lots of heat and still stuck
More of same, held the torch on it for about two minutes, frame smoking
and finally

Got the torque converter and flex plate bolted up together, as well as the upper bellhousing to block bolts. Also got our apn header and intake manifold bolted up. Had to shave the rear mounting hole on the header to get it to sit lower, as well as shaving the bottom of the intake to clear the #6 exhaust tube. Used a piece of paper as a feeler guage. Id like to get the rest of the exhaust (especially the downpipe) remade.

Dads been busy while I've been at school and work! We got it running today! A little hesitant at first, but then it was purring like a kitten in a hookah shop, white smokes normal right? Grrrr... leaky injector dripping gas, but lots of white smoke from the exhaust, a bit from the flange after the header. We used the 97's Cat and muffler, but the smoke from the flange makes me believe it came from before there. Also had some stuff dripping from the muffler but it smelled like water (nothing).
This motor ran fine when we were at hollister ohv at the end of march, so now something is off... maybe there's oil on the header still that's burning off? Hmmmm....
Also flushed the heater core, 20.5 gallons of nasty water flushed back and forth before it ran decently clean.

Smoke was gone last time I saw it running, so that's good. Got the front axle swapped over today, new axle shaft u joints and ball joints to boot! We also removed the "frame stiffeners" from the black one. Po didnt prep either surface or weld a single line that i could call a bead. Two-pound hammer and a chisel i made in shop class made short work of them goobers.
Just need to swap the rear axle, cross our t's dot our i's and cut our fenders thing looks funky with its nose in the air! (pics tomorrow in the daylight) Same could be said about the black one with its bun in the sun haha! Getting very close now!
We put my old 89 bumper on the red so we can use the bull bar and brush guards for em. At least till we can get some armor on there

Hey guys got some more for ya, rear end is in and ready to go! Rebuilt the brakes with new shoes and turned drums, also took the rear fenders off we've got our final checklist ready to go! Pretty much need to bleed the brakes, get the interior put back together and make sure everything is torqued properly. Then well go for a spin to make sure its all buttoned up before we trim the fenders, check bumpstoppage, trim again if neccesary and start wheeling! Can't wait!
I love that brushguard! I actually lost the passenger side of it (its a three piece) and remade it while I was in high school. There's only a few things that make it different than the other side, you'd never know if I didn't say anything haha!
