Misfit, the ZJ build

Well I am back with another Jeep. It's a 1998 Grand Cherokee Laredo with a 3.5" IRO Lift and 31's on it currently. I got it for very cheap, it needs a trans and tires(more on this in a few). It has the 4.0L with 183k miles,42RH trans(shot) and the 242 Transfer case. I have a decent list of parts for it and had a budget, but already blew that out of the water lol

The story on how i ended up with it is, my Cousin was wheeling it on Turkey day the local ORV park and while trying an obstical he blew the trans(was on it's last leg already) and while being recovered he inadvertantly got hung up on a branch puncturing the sidewall of the front DS tire, and causing the rear on the same side to pop off the bead(its back on but no air in it) thus the lopsided stance. I actually bought it before he even got pulled out to the parking lot, and he delivered it the next day(Black Friday).

Plans:
8.8 Rear end swap(LSD and 3.73 gears)
Rough Country Long Arm upgrade
33x12.50x15 Duratracs
Boostwerks Engineering T-Case shift linkage
Lokka D30 Front locker
Smittybuilt XRC 9k winch
Rough Country Winch plate
12volt Guy In cab winch control setup

That is the skinny on the plan. it will be a straight forward build mostly. I have already ordered or am picking up this week the following parts

8.8 Rear end(local JY for $100,3.73 gear and LSD)
8.8 Swap stuff(Iron Rock Off Road)
Rough Country Long arm upgrade
Boostwerks 242 Linkage
42RH trans(picking up weekend of 12/2)
33x12.50x15 Duratracs(picking up weekend of 12/2)
Rear bumper
Hayden Trans Cooler(already have)

I only have a few pictures of it currently, it's also covered in mud so i need to clean it before starting work on it...

Should be a neat build! Following for some ideas for the Green Gremlin build.

It's the same color as your jeep lol but muddy.

JSJJ388 11-29-2016 02:13 PM

I saw that, the front bumper is about all that is green lol.

Mr. Pink 11-29-2016 02:49 PM

yea, the DS rear door is blue and the PS front is silver... i may sand them down and spray bomb them green but i really dont care too much to do it lol.

JSJJ388 11-29-2016 02:52 PM

I just got done swapping a matching door onto mine. Well almost. Still dont have power windows.......

Mr. Pink 11-29-2016 03:06 PM

Yea I'm fine with the mismatched doors as long as the windows work lol

So i saved this from my last ZJ, i am still a member of the local club so i see it fitting to put it on the new Jeep.

So the parts started showing up. I also replaced the battery today too. she fired right up. I pick up the 33's tomorrow(which i am trading for 35's lol), and it gets towed to get the trans replaced this weekend.

Martlor13 12-01-2016 04:29 PM

Rough country eh? Liked everything besides that haha. Subbed.

Mr. Pink 12-01-2016 04:45 PM

just their Long arm upgrade, was in the budget for the Jeep and its a front and rear setup.

So i received 95% of my long arm kit. They screwed up in shipping, they sent me two sets of front arms, and no rear's. They are overnighting me a set of the rear arms. and i have to ship the second set of fronts back. but oh well.

So i got a few things accomplished. 33's are on, got the 8.8 swap brackets from IRO, and then the rear long arms will be here on Wednesday.

JSJJ388 12-05-2016 02:38 PM

Its starting to look like a jeep again! shaping up to e a good rig

Mr. Pink 12-06-2016 04:42 PM

Yay more parts...

https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...fe&oe=58BC22C4

Boostwerks 242 shift linkage

Oh and this...
https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...17&oe=58BC1776

8.8 Axle 3.73 gears and OEM LSD. best part was the price... $100. I will have all of $350 into my 8.8 swap. And that was the price of the Artec truss, which i dont believe i'll need.

Mr. Pink 12-07-2016 07:25 PM

Replaced the TPS today, the jeep runs so much better. It however has no gears whatsoever including park lol. So i have to get that replaced asap. I need to borrow the trailer and get it upto one of my fellow club members who has my replacement trans and is putting it in for me. cost of trans and labor... $450.

Mr. Pink 12-09-2016 12:52 PM

Finished the switch plate setup, I am happy with it. However i wish i had a different colored Fiberglass panel...

Mr. Pink 12-09-2016 10:43 PM

So i got a hell of a deal on a winch... Normal cost is $1300+ shipping, I paid $544.50 shipped.

Mr. Pink 12-12-2016 06:10 PM

I take it not very many read my build thread eh... So the Jeep named itself, well one presented itself to me. I present you with project Misfit.

JSJJ388 12-13-2016 06:41 AM

Love the new name. If have any parts youd like to donate to the Green Gremlin build Ill send you my address :thumbup1::thumbup:

lol, im pulling stock parts off. I ordered my winch plate this past week too.

Rough Country's winch plate

http://www.roughcountry.com/jeep-zj-...late-1049.html

However i may return the plate when it gets here, an opportunity to get an ARB bumper has presented itself for cheap, so i may go that route.

JSJJ388 12-14-2016 07:37 AM

AWESOME man!

Mr. Pink 01-01-2017 11:06 AM

The 42RE that is the OEM trans sucks in the ZJ,TJ,LJ as does the other variants of the chrysler engineered trans(44RH/RE,46RH/RE etc...), my solution to that issue is swapping in an AW4 from an XJ/early ZJ. I have already located the trans, AW4 ZJ shifter, AW4 ZJ shift cable, and i ordered the RAdesigns Rail II Manual transmission controller so i can shift the trans without wiring in a TCM. I am hoping that my shifter, the RADesigns controller and the cable are here soon enough as i want to work on other things that are waiting for this Jeep like the HPD30 that i got for free, the D300 transfer case that i am flipping, putting 4:1 gears in and twin sticking. Oh and not to mention the 8.8 swap lol.

Mr. Pink 01-04-2017 06:26 PM

I wonder why i bothered making a build thread...

But my Viair Air Source showed up today. It's tiny compaired to the OBA setup i sold a while back, its a 2gal tank with a 150psi 2gal setup, should do pretty good up to a 35" tire.

5-Speed 01-04-2017 07:17 PM

That compressor looks huge! Where are you going to mount it?

XJwonders 01-04-2017 08:42 PM

Don't worry man. I have been subbed to this thread since the day you created it

Mr. Pink 01-04-2017 10:47 PM

The compressor setup is actually tiny as hell(roughly 21" in length) so it opens up a ton of mounting places but it will most likely be on the driver side of the cargo area. And Thanks Neal. At least there is a few that are looking at this thread. I just need the Jeep back from getting teh AW4 swapped in to mount all the parts, figure out wiring the switch panel and fuse box.

5-Speed 01-04-2017 11:20 PM

Ya 21" isnt too bad. Should fit back there nicely. On board air is always a good thing! Hopefully you post some pictures after you mount it. Curious to see how this turns out.

Mr. Pink 01-04-2017 11:29 PM

yea i will. it wont be for a few, but i'll be posting more updates when i get it back from the mechanic.

JSJJ388 01-05-2017 06:57 AM

Im still following! Dont really post a whole lot cause its your build. Where did you get that compressor at? I like it and could use something other than the one that plugs into my cigarette lighter.
