free pos xj makes perfect rock crawler on budget
im going ot be startin my new build very soon but first some background, i recently sold my 99 xj(jeep in my sig) and have been working on my rx7 project for the past 4 months or so. just the other day a buddy came to me and asked for help with his jeep, he has an 88 chief as a DD but his rear end locked up on him so he got another free 88 xj for the rear end. so he asked me to swap rear ends and put the good one in his DD and if i do that hes giving me the parts truck for free! so i said hell ya ill do it!
so yesterday i went and look at the jeep hes giving me.... score!! schwing!! i scored here! so teh jeep might look like a total pos to you guys at first but i see major potential for a awesome rock crawler/mudder.
specs of the free jeep:
the good:
-already lifted 4.5-5" it looks like a old *** rustys lift
-31" BFG Muddies in good shape
-good running 4.0
-strong tranny and t-case(aw4 and 231)
-not sure about front end parts
-interior completley striped already
the not so good(for now anyways):
-no dash, gauges, heater, nothing but steering column and drivers seat.
-drivers side floor board rusted
-all wires(computer, fuse panel, etc.) laying on floor not sure whats cut
-no rear end after i swap it into his xj
goal: make rock crawler cheaply as possible but keep saftey and funcionality in mind.
plans:
-take bad rear end, weld spider gears up solid and put it in(if need be ill get a junkyard carrier and weld that one up)
-weld front spider gears solid
-replace water pump and oil pump(for good measure)
-clean up wiring mess, make simple dash out of 1/8" steel
-buy cheap aftermarket gauges and put into steel dash (tach, temp, oil)
-wire fuel pump and iginition to switchs in dash(makes for easy pump shut off in rollover)
-remove all doors and hatch
-build roll cage, 9-10 point
-5 point harness
-cut fenders, upgrade to 35's(sell 31's $$$)
-build completley home made long arms from scratch to replace short arms for better flex up front
thats about it for now, ill have pics tomorrow i have to pull the jeep out of my buddies yard burried in 4 feet of snow, than ill start adding pics
thanks for watching guys
