ahaha... there's a reason the auto one is off..... wait are you saying that you didn't put one back on? haha that would be funny! sorry i have to laugh at that.

today i searched for a proper pilot bearing. i ordered a throw out and pilot from amazon and they looked correct but the pilot bushing (big spacer) on the 98 might not want to come out. i looked up every thing possible and came up with this:

this is the pilot i was sent... well the style, not that part number or anything even close to that part number, just the picture matches:
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...=pilot+bearing

this is what i came up with as far as what i will be trying on tuesday:

thanks, it's already bolted up and plugged in. not sure how all of this is going to work since the 97 only has CCD bus and the 98 is PCI. i have swapped all the communication harness' though so i hope it will work. i didn't think about the MIC though, i should check and make sure that all the pins are the same for that between the two years.

edit: i checked the cluster and it looks like it's ok, C2 pins 1 and 2 are CCD bus wires.

Yea if you swapped the entire harness, you'll be plenty fine! I only swapped the powertrain harness so I had to fool around a bit. If it doesn't start I can help you out.

Edit: pre test that pilot bearing on the input shaft on the tranny

i ended up swapping the engine bay harness (not the engine harness), the dash harness, and the harness from the right side of the steering colum to the fuse box and ORC. as far as i can tell that's the only ones that needed to be swapped. but i guess i won't know for sure until tomorrow when i go to fire it up..lol.

i'll be sure to test fit the pilot to the trans before i install it into the crank.

trans is in and she's driving.

not too many pictures today as i ran into a couple problems, and i was working really slow cause i'm sore from crashing my motorcycle yesterday.

the day started off with me addressing my pilot bearing problem. i went into our parts dept and asked them to see if we had a pilot bearing or the bushing that was supposed to be in the crank. he said we had the bushing but not the bearing, it could be ordered for the next day. i told him to just grab me the bushing cause i have the bearing already. he comes back with it and when i open it inside is the exact bearing i posted above that is supossed to be a altenator bearing or what ever. and i mean it was the same damn part, part number stampings and all. so i went and put that in and bolted up the clutch.

then i replaced the throw out bearing

and bolted in the trans and tcase. then i put the slave and master in and fired her up. she fired up first shot but had a CEL and ran rough. i grabbed a DRB and gave her the first OBD test... will she need a super card in order to scan her or not? she didn't and everything communicated perfectly. i checked my codes and i had a injector 6 control circuit failure. i checked the wiring and the connectors and unplugged the c3 connector on the pcm and plugged it back in and started her up again and she p[urred like a kitten, no CEL or anything.

after that i started on the driveshafts. here's where i ran into a problem. apparently if you have abs the drivehsaft and u joints are different.... my donor jeep had abs. the donor uses a spicer 1330 u joint while non abs uses a 1310. the auto driveshaft is way too short but i lovered my t-case and inch and it fits on there and i just used it to get home. tomorrow i will get a 1330/1310 u joint for the manual driveshaft and call it a day until i get a sye and put that in there.

the front drivahsaft: my auto one was new... only a few months old. i was pretty disappointed to find out it was too long. the stock 5 speed one fit fine although it doesn't look like i can lift it any higher without shortening it some.

that's pretty much it. i still have little stuff on the interior to put back together but she's up and running, with cold a/c and a properly working a/c box.

Default Exhaust manifold

i put a new exhaust manifold on it last weekend. i won't bore you with the details, just a few pictures for my records.

After i was done i had to test her out:

i need lockers and tires

i think my project for this week will be either to start getting ready to put the auto back in (in case i decide to go that route) or put that rear fender flare back on.

Thinking about it. I always liked driving stick in my cars but in a truck its not as nice, esp off road. I kinda overlooked one thing to... I built this jeep to be a recovery vehicle for if I or someone I was riding with got stuck in the woods when riding our bikes. I guess I forgot that some people can't drive stick. When I crashed my bike a couple weeks ago out in the glades it got me wondering if I really wanted one of the guys I was with driving my stick box jeep through the tight trails to come get me.

Nothing is set in stone though, I love the stick on the street, which is where me jeep spends most of its time. Its also more work that I don't want to do.

remember, you can always start a stick. If your battery dies with a slushbox, your screwed if your by yourself. I cant believe you did all that work and your willing to undue it. When i did the switch I was so happy, and still am, especially off road.

I am happy wit it on the street but not off road, it takes skill to drive this thing off road. My main hobby is riding dualsport bikes and the man purpose of my jeep is a rescue vehicle. It don't thing I want a newbie driving my jeep through the rocks in the glades.

The sap was also a make it OE brake it swap for mpg.... I needed to see a height improvetn in order to keep the the stick box.... I haven't. T also wasn't that much work.

The swap was a make it or break it experiment to getting better gas mileage. My mpg didn't change much so its time to go.

No I didn't put the auto back in yet, I'm in no rush. It won't be a big deal tho.... mainly engine bay harness and pedals will be the worst of it. I need my jeep to go court often (have to wear a suit, so no motorcycle) so if I ever have a slow day at work and no court date coming up I might tear into it. For now tho the 5 speed is growing on me.

The nice thing about going the other way is I can put the auto engine bay harness in first and jump the park neutral wires so it'll start and I can leave the 5 speed pedals in until I get time to put the auto in.
