Hoping to have the caliper by Sunday and with any luck I will get to the local AP store and get the rear brake hoses to fab up some new hard lines. Also took the crossmember to work and soaked it in the parts washer. Its all clean and ready to be trimmed and repainted.

No time to run and get the caliper today, but i did get the cross member trimmed down and welded(pics later) just need to grind it a bit and paint. Hopefully I can get that done tomorrow so I can free up my jack and stands from under the transfer case and get them under the rear axle. The rear axle has so much droop I cant fit my drain pan under it to dump the rear diff and pull the axles out.

Ok, going has been slow since it has been raining a bunch here and work has been crazy busy. Finally got the caliper in on the PS and found a coil retainer clamp while I was at the JY looking for other parts.

Also got the cross member tripped down and painted. Clearance to the drive shaft is much better now, hopefully this will solve the issue. went ahead and reinstalled it since I needed my jack and stands for the rear end. While its apart I am going to try and build a new skid plate for it.
Cant see it, and really didn't care to dress the welds....i'll get over it.

Pulled the rear diff cover to drain, will inspect the rear end and replace any damaged parts in there since I need to pull the rear axle shafts to install the rear disk brakes. When I was at the JY the other day I grabbed the proportioning valve guts from a 96 ZJ to make sure I had enough pressure to the rear brakes.

The new spring is much shorter than the original, but is way stronger. Wasn't sure about the length but after a consult with Cruiser54 he assured me it would fit.Well, he was right. In the middle of our conversation I went ahead and test fit it. while the spring is longer, its also stronger and the requires compression just to get the cap to fit.

Proportioning valve differences, original guts have zip tie.

Just waiting for the rear brake hose to come in to complete the swap. I will be using 2 passenger side brake hoses and trimming and flaring the hard lines

Well, the brake hose finally came in so back to work.

pulled the rear cover to drain the diff and pull the axle shafts out. Looked over the shafts for spline twist etc. all good. Pattern looks good and no silver oil....that's good.

Got the axle shafts out, and backing plates removed. Cleaned up the axle ends, checked the bearing and seals. will be putting in new seals during the overhaul.

Got the backing plates mounted, and rotors test fitted and of course things were going too smoothly until....I found the passenger side caliper frozen so now I got to go back to the AP store and locate another one.

test fit

I also need to pick up a set of brake pad wear plates, gear oil and additive.

Angry

Ugh.....been one of those weeks I guess. I got all the wear plates, replacement rear calipers and R/F replacement caliper installed and bleed only to find out that the L/F caliper is now hanging up. Need to go and get a replacement, but i'm slammed the rest of the week with work. Looks like it will have to wait till the weekend to get on her wheels.

On a side note, we got some snow (strange for San Diego) and I happened to be up in the area working and testing out some new work trucks so I got in some snow wheeling to "test" out the new truck. Wish I could post some pics but that's against our company social media policy and I like my job. I will say, I'm note a huge Ford fan (got a built Duramax) but the new 19 Ford F150 4x4 is a nice truck.

Got off at a decent time from work so I swung by the parts store and picked up my new D/S caliper. All installed and bleed out...no more hang ups. Hoping to hit up Home Depot on sat and get some cable ends to finish off the parking brakes then I can at least drive it again. Next up, trans shift kit since i'm due for a trans service anyway.

Rear disks installed and all is well. I had to make an extension for the parking brake handle to get some extra cable out of the jacket.

I used two right side brake cable from a TJ because they were much longer than the stock cables which always hung up on full droop.

Used the loop around method for the parking brake cables.

Used some cable clamps as shown below.

Wrapped them around a thimble to make the loop.

Longer cables require you to "loop" them from side to side
