Bright Red 97 XJ Build
#181
I did mine about a month ago, it was easy for the most part. If you get an actually headliner replacement I am sure it would be easier. But, I went to Hobby Lobby and got some fleece that I liked ( 5 yards x 3 yards ) and went to work. But if you do use fleece of any other material make sure you have a clean cut and no excess fabric around any of the cut outs because I had a little too much up around where the visors mount and it was a true pain.

Been thinking, whenever my 4.0 craps out on me I'll wanna do an engine swap, or a stroker. Been looking around and have seen the 4.7L Golen stroker, a 350 small block chevy, and the 5.3L/4l60e trans combo. More towards the last one. Also thinking about the Ford 8.8 swap, one with disk brakes. If I come across a Craigslist deal like I saw before of an LS3/4l60e combo with wiring harness for $800 I just might have to jump on that too. Other than those fantasies I got a second soundbar from Brandon from the meet. Looking to redo the headliner black, mount up and wire the other soundbar, and get better speakers all the way around.

I know I know. A ton of work and $$, I'm only thinking this cause my stepdad's going to swap in a 5.0 Coyote engine into his fox body mustang soon and I'm sitting here thinking "hmm can I fit something like that in the Jeep??" Doesn't help that he's encouraging me lol. But I haven't had much problems engine-wise that's why I'm daydreaming. But it'd be pretty cool to have all the extra power.

I hear ya man haha. I keep telling myself if this 4.0 goes this jeep wont get another. But in all reality it probably would. My dad, and brother, and one of my friends tell me to swap a small block in almost daily.

Obviously this is probably more for a chat thread and not a build thread, but you guys have me thinking now! The idea of a fresh 4.0L sounds so nice! Not that I should need one anytime soon, but if I find a XJ with a blown engine, I'll scoop it up if I can get it for dirt cheap and put a new 4.0 in it.

Since you are all talking about it, any of you guys know of a quality remanned 4.0L supplier? Also what are the pros and cons of the short block vs. long block? What do XJ's come with stock?

You'll meet some cool people in chicago jeep patrol, and badlands is an amazing place. But it seems like most of the people in that group absolutely LOVE mud and water and don't even go near the quarry/rocks at the badlands from when I went out with them.

A guy who works at Advanced Auto by me went last week and he was saying stay away from the swamps, but he also built his rig more towards rock crawling. This'll be my first time doing any real offroading so I might try alittle bit of everything. As long as I make it back in 1 piece. Or fixable pieces. Open diffs FTW!

Thats my best advice for ya, Stay away from anything that looks like a sink hole or water. I don't know if you've done much or any wheeling before but im sure you'll learn quickly what you like.
When I first started going to the badlands with Anthony & Zac and a few other friends I was scared of 90% of the stuff there because it was a few months after I rolled my last jeep being stupid and just started building the blue one. But now I'm pretty confident and absolutely love the trailing and rocks vs what I used to like which was water and muddy messes.

Ordered my gears. A great deal from James. Nitro 4.56s with master install kits and a new carrier for the D30. I'll be safe to bump up to 33s if I want to, and my Jeep'll have more pep in it's step. Still have to figure out how to intall them, don't really want spend a grand for a shop to do it.
Also tried to fix my steering box, the problem was there was a bad batch of bumper mounts and it's missing one of the steering box bolt holes. Tried. Thought it'd be easier to drill through it and not waste time with shipping or anything. I realized too late I was drilling at an angle. So another one is on its way now. Aaand I need 4 hands to get the box and 2 remaining bolts back in place

I've never truely wheeled yet, but at this rate I might not be going cause of one big thing. No rear recovery points. Where my nut strips should go is pretty rusty, and I still need to get mounting hardware for my hitch. And my steering problem. Since I only have 2 bolts in it when I'm going slow or stopped all the power steering goes away. Not fun while going through a parking lot. And the one bolt gets loose and my steering wheel loses stiffness.
Thats pretty lousy on the steering, and I'm sure youd be fine for putting the nut strip in the rear. Just spray it with some rust reformer a few hours atleast before you put it on. My rear unibody as absolutely FKD. Ask Zac about it, its pretty much non extistant on the bottom part where nut strips go, because it was in an accident and never fixed properly. Its all good now though from us doing shackle relocators that cut out the old shackle box, so now my rear bumpers tied to the unibody, rear floor, leaf springs, and shackle boxes.
Don't feel bad about not going though, I've missed the last 3 wheeling trips from trying to fix everything on mine, and I have to do a rear main seal and oil pump on it this weekend. I'll be sure to invite you every time I go wheeling though. If that ever happens again...

Tried to take advantage of this unusually nice day (60° compared to the 35° yesterday) and do my extended brake lines. Found out my flange nuts are rusted, so I have to get new hard lines. At least I didn't break anything this time.
Instead I washed the jeep and under the hood aswell. The engine didn't turn out that well, used some Auto Zone brand enginge degreaser and it sucked. Next time I'll use Purple Power, heard that's really good. Also got my MAF sensor wet and wouldn't start in the Lowes parking lot. I dried it out with some compressed air, took a couple tries to turn over, but gave it some gas and it did. Next time I'll cover up my sensors.
