So I was finally going to get around to a few repairs and odds and ends with the Battle Wagon but she had other plans. Went to get on the highway and it wouldn't shift into 3rd or 4th. Codes didn't show anything that I thought would affect it. So I'm going to double check the tcu with a voltmeter and if that doesn't show anything I'm going to drop the transmission pan and check the Solenoids.

Does it feel like the torque converter isn't grabbing either?

My Jeep is/was doing the same thing.

I believe mine is an NSS issue because my backup lights are wacko too.

I drove Red82's the other day and put in 1-2 and started going. Once rolling put it in 3 and it wouldn't shift up at all. Stopped, put it in D and it sifted up once rolling but it was a delayed and hard shift.

Checked the fuses in both the engine bay and cabin and they were good. TPS is brand new. Checked the fluid level and it was good but the fluid needs changed.

Didn't think about the NSS, but that's an easy test (try starting it in gear and reverse lights). We're gonna test the TCU ohm readings (should be between 12-14) and if that's good start looking at solenoids. The fluid and filter need changed so the pan's gonna be dropped anyway bad part though is that those suckers aren't cheap. May be a good time to visit the junk yard and pull 'em from another XJ.

You should be able to check for continuity on the NSS plug in the engine bay between shifter locations. It's easy to do like you said. Transmissions suck. I got lucky my donor 4wd one and case didn't have any major issues I guess.

Well after some deductive reasoning we thought the culprit of my transmission issues was a solenoid. Turned out they are pretty easy to replace but quite expensive new! So off to the pick n pull we went. Only $20 each there.

Once you drain the transmission and remove all of the 10 mm bolts holding it you will need to also disconnect the fill tube from the bell housing. It's one bolt but in a tight spot. Once we removed that we decided to just zip tie the fill/check tube into place. By removing that bolt it allows you to remove the pan completely so you have space to work. What you will see is this.

The big metal "rectangle" is the transmission fluid filter. It's has 4 10 mm bolts. I removed it to make it easy to access the last solenoid. I was also replacing it. Doing that leaves you with this:

Each solenoid the (there are three) is held on by one 10mm bolt and an electrical connection. Simple enough.

Clean off the old gasket/rtv reapply and bolt everything up. All bolts are 10 ft/lbs so be careful not to over tighten and strip em.

Ended up not being the problem though.

I knew I needed a new cat. It had been rattling something fierce and recently stopped. Basically the cat had melted so much it ended up breaking a part and then filled the exit hole completely. I was ordering a new set up from Performance Curve anyways. So we removed the exhaust to see if that did it and sure enough it did. I've never heard a vehicle without a muffler or cat. Sounded like a v8! So the Battle Wagon is sitting until performance curve's exhaust gets here.

And no I'm not advocating removing your cat we removed the exhaust merely for diagnostic purposes.

x2 on that as well.

Mine ended up fixing itself somehow.

was fiddling with some wires and stuff under the hood. I think it was just some water in some connections or something.

I sold a bunch of Starbucks stock I've had so that I'd have money for a few repairs and whatever else I wanted for the Battle Wagon. I ordered my performance curve exhaust with the Flowmaster 40 as well as a high flow cat. Hopefully it'll be in tomorrow.

I'm debating a few things like stiffeners and bumpers etc. I found this bumper here on CF. I'm thinking of getting it. What do you all think?I think I'll also seriously be looking into stiffeners so I can build rock rails and all off of that.

RuffStuff stiffeners are top notch and for the price unbeatable. Really wish I had done stiffeners first, but thankfully my LA mounts aren't welded yet so it'll just be a matter of unbolting them.

You know my thoughts on the bumper already.

Wow that exhaust came fast! Now to find someone who's schedule matches mine and get it welded up.

Talk to Tim. For just an exhaust I would think a 6 pack of Dos Equis would do
