Default Back yard engine rebuild question

I hope this is the right section for an engine bearing question.

Here is a shot of the first bearing I got out of my 4.0. I stopped work as soon as I saw how bad it is.

First question is about the condition of this bearing. It's clearly past done, but what made the little pits all around it? Did this unit have coolant in the oil and then get parked that way for a long time? Does that bad spot in the piston side of the bearing indicate a prolonged detonation or just a lot of miles?

Second question is for doing a ghetto rebuild like this, being as the bearing that came out is marked .010 should I order a set of these, should I check to make sure all of them are .010, or am I going to end up with a set of .010 and then plastigauge all of them and end up with a mixed set? So far as I've gone the crank seems fine in spite of the contamination grooves in that bearing.

I was planning to do just the rod bearings, but now that I see one I'll have to check and do the mains as well.

Or does this look like enough bad news to warrant just getting a reman engine from one of those short block places?

I think I answered my own question. The adjacent main looks like the less terrible half of that rod bearing and the crank has a texture.

Which vendor is making reman short or long blocks that are actually worth buying?

Your block & crank are probably fine. That's what machine shops are for. Ask at your local NAPA if they can recommend a good one.

There is a shop in town I have in mind if I go that route. I agree the block and head should be fine with a very thorough cleaning and at least a cylinder hone. The crank will have to be polished at least. The cam lobes look ok. The bearings have a number of deep sharp grooves in them where something small and hard contaminated the oil like sand or something and this is reflected in at least some crank journals. I'll have to check with them about pricing for various operations and consider that vs. the time and risk of a reman crate. I see a lot of bad reviews about the remans, and I'd be doing the work myself, so it sounds like there would be no warranty.
