It's that time again to organize my thoughts.. That's right Phase FOUR of the jeep build. Let's recap

Phase 1: Lift, 31's, Head Swap
Phase 2: SYE, Axle swap LP D30>HP D30 & D35>C8.25 + axle shims.
Phase 3: Gears, 35's, Fender Flares, One Ton Steering

Phase 4 I've got a load of work to do under BB that I've been putting off so listing it out in this post to keep myself on track.

Part One: Rear End
  1. Fix rear gears (improper gear setup causing early failure)
  2. Shock Relocation tabs (weld em on!)
  3. Clean up 8.25 and paint
  4. Remove fuel tank and replace fuel pump (preventative - FP has made some stressed noises lately)
  5. Remove Rear bumper and old trailer hitch nutstrips
  6. Wire-Wheel and grind corrosion from tcase-back
  7. Rear Frame Stiffeners
  8. Paint (POR15)
  9. New hard brake lines for axle
  10. Replace return hard fuel line that has pinhole
  11. Add .75" lift by moving up a shackle bolt
Part Two: Front End
  1. Tear out front axle
  2. Replace all hard brake lines
  3. Cav Fab Alpha 3-link kit
  4. Metal Cloak 4.5" Coils
  5. New extended front soft brake lines
  6. WJ Knuckle Swap
why do I do this to myself

Thanks definitely getting easier or I just have selective memory...

More updates TLDR is that the rear portion of this phase is complete. I have functional e-brakes and my gears don't make noise like the last set

Gas tank went in easily. I found that spare tire j hooks work as gas tank strap j hooks so if you ever snap yours just grab a couple that have been sitting inside the cab rather than out =]

Axle went in and got the new shock mounts welded on

Brakes were a bit of a headache per usual. I had new lines which was nice tho. I think I got my ebrake sorted as well, never quite had it right before.

In Other news I got my windshield replaced, they are going to have to fix it bc i can hear wind coming thru but it's so nice to have clear glass. NO RUST (miracle)

Found an OHC from a 1995 at the JY. I've never really caught the OHC bug but this one is slimmer and less obnoxious IMO than the 97+ ones. I'm going to skip the part where I figure out the wiring and just give it power and figure out an arduino system for the screen. Stay tuned for that winter project!

arduino system for the screen??????
You will have to share the details of that in the coming months!

You know once you have it up there with the lights working, you will be so happy that you put one in, I know I love it now.
Not to mention I love having the sun glasses holder too.

Yep - I don't want to commit to anything quite yet for what the process will be bc I haven't opened it and even seen whats there BUT some ideas are I would have to put in a different screen there (OLED likely) and would be super cool to repurpose those existing buttons instead of using generic ones. I was also measuring the "garage door opener" section and there is potential to do a sleek drop down screen there. I have a friend who has been trying to get me to use a Nextion touch screen display for a project and this may be the goal! Tying into OBDII is possible but what do I really want on the screens? That will be the question.

I've been putting the front end off. I like driving the jeep and it's cold so spring time will be when phase 4 is completed. I destroyed the rear bumper removing it while revamping the whole rear end so I've been driving around with nothing on the rear like I imagine most of you are :P. I had a flat packed amazon DIY kit for a bumper waiting so I decided to finally start. I'm pretty picky about bumper aesthetics and for some reason this one piqued my interest. For $150 it's the best bang for your buck

Main pieces tacked together

First real welding project for me...

I'm learning

Not so bad, she sits a hair low

Lines don't match up well, when I go back in to make frame tie ins I will address this.

I have the bits and bobs ordered for rear tire carier. Will be heading to the steel yard this week to get materials and get on that job

Haha Thanks man, this isn't going to be a fast project mainly bc I can't do the headliner work until it warms up a bit for the spray adhesive but I will have the guts wrapped up. I've decided instead of doing a just a final post on it to post as I go in the spirit of the "Build Thread" so buckle up...

My Vision is to have a clean factree looking OHC install that has a few goodies baked in. So I'll list out my goals what I want out of this thing.

1. Functioning Lights (including auto on when doors are open) As of now I plan to keep factree bulbs but may "upgrade" to LED
2. Ham Radio Head Unit Mount This will fit into the former garage door opener section and will post a pic of what that will look like
3. Security Light My kill switch is on a DPDT relay and I have a blinking LED currently on my dash, I want to relocate this to the OHC
4. Functioning Screen This is where the fun starts to come in and I will break my goals here into subsections.
  • a. Startup and shutdown animation
  • b. Outside Air Temperature
  • c. Inside Air Temperature
  • d. Altitude (GPS not barometric)
  • e. Compass Heading
5. GPS Tracking and LTE Cloud Upload Independant of the screen the arduino will log coordinates and send to cloud or text while running and will attempt to code so it can send one final position report after vehicle is shut down (so i know where thief parked it)
6. Repurpose factory buttons for use on the arduino/screen

I realize some folks may think I'm crazy for doing all this work and investing in parts for something that ultimately will not be reading from OBDII. Personally I have torque pro and I feel that I could never build something that will be better than that. Reading codes or real time MPG is not enough juice to be worth the squeeze for me to link this to the jeeps computer. IMO this is going to be way more bada$$

Parts list so far is below and pricing for transparency on the project cost and attainability

$4 JY 1995 OHC and Harness
$40 Arduino Mega
$5 Hologram Global IoT SIM Card

$40 Monochrome 2.3" 128x32 OLED (Adafruit 2675)

$70 Botletics SIM7000 LTE CAT-M1 NB-IoT Cellular + GPS + Antenna Shield Kit

$15 Lithium Ion Polymer Battery 3.7V 1200mAh

Some Pics to get an idea...

Documentation I'll be following for the more complex portion of the arduino setup is here https://www.instructables.com/LTE-NB...d-for-Arduino/
