anybody still following this?

I got the front springs replaced, and that seems to have addressed the issue of the front drive shaft hitting the exhaust, I then tightened up the trackbar good, and that seems to have fixed the death wobble. I got a longer ratchet than I was using and was able to turn the bolt holding it to the frame almost two full turns, so it was absolutely able to spin slop around. I'll take it for a bigger trip later.

This morning I messed with the brakes again, the rears needed adjustment for sure, BUT they were not enough, and I think my brake booster is bad. anybody have any tips on how to test this? (or I still have a TON of air in the lines... )

Well it has been near a damn year since I touched my jeep, It was in storage since January, I've been moving and packing since before December, and Moved into a house three months ago that basically needed to be gutted and rebuilt, so I've been dealing with that. Right now I'm trying to catch up on most of a year of deferred maintenance on our other vehicles, so the jeep is still bottom priority, but maybe, just maybe I'll get it finished before I've owned it half a decade?

Right now she's parked with the law mowers/garden tractor:

She moved under her own power (after being on the battery charger for a couple of hours), and I'm serious about getting it wrapped up:

what I KNOW needs to get done:
  1. brakes are a mere suggestion to stop (i've replaced the whole system, still scarey)
  2. Death wobble over 30mph.
  3. front seats are broken/trash (I actually have new ones on the way)
  4. Throttle sticks open (which is extra super fun when your brakes don't work)
  5. return fuel line is pissing fuel onto the exhaust header.
  6. interior carpets are soaked in oil so I need to clean them so I can actually put anything in there.
  7. No AC (and I live in AZ, that is not optional) and no heat.
  8. there is a very worrying click when you're moving along, I've replaced the Ujoints, so not sure what it is coming from. It is speed dependent.

I could stand to also re-grease the tracks for the electric windows. so they go up and down easier, as well as the electric locks, though I need to replace the door locks I don't have a key for them (or get a key made by a lock smith). and re-tint the windows. and.... the list goes on.

well, already fixed my sticking gas pedal, the two bolts holding it in place were super loose, and there was a cabling hanging down that was causing it to hang up, so I pushed the cable up and zip tied it into place and tightened up the bolts. only 7 more things to go...

  9. replace inspection plate
  10. Rear exhaust bolt needs threads chased, currently has no bolt since i cannot put a bolt in there, is left over from when I got it rebuilt, I think there is some paint, so it has an exhaust leak.

Put in correct length brake lines and bled them with the help of my son, I won't know how they are till after I fix some other stuff.

Next is going through the front suspension to see if i can figure out the death wobble, see what is lose.

  1. brakes are a mere suggestion to stop (i've replaced the whole system, still scarey)
  2. Death wobble over 30mph. Looked at the suspension, had the wife wiggle the steering back and forth and I couldn't find a darn thing loose. This will probably go to a shop when I get to that point.

  11. Put in the Clock style REM II. If you have a Renix jeep, 100% worth your money. https://nickintimedesign.com/shop/

My Cherokee was not enough of a project, so I picked up another:

aroundincircles Aug 14, 2023 09:57 PM

after owning it 3 years, finally got it registered, my last house was in a county that required emissions testing, but because it didn't run that wasn't really an option, but I moved an no longer live in a county that requires that so I was able to register it for 5 years for $70. Not bad.

Hey dont feel bad, I have had my Jeep for nearly 2 years and havent registered it. Same reasons as you. Going to just register it to my AZ address and call it a day. Makes things so much easier.

is it sad that I go so long between bouts of working on my XJ I have to come to my threat to figure out what i need to do next? So of this list:
  1. return fuel line is pissing fuel onto the exhaust header.
  2. interior carpets are soaked in oil so I need to clean them so I can actually put anything in there.
  3. No AC (and I live in AZ, that is not optional) and no heat.

I'm going to focus on the brakes, the fuel line, the death wobble, and the click. My truck has bad head gasket, and I need to tear into it to fix, but I need something to drive in the meant time. I can live with everything else I think for now. I am going to re-replace the ujoins in the rear drive shaft. I THINK that's the source of the click, it's the only thing that makes sense at least, replace the fuel line, and pick up a new brake master from somewhere other than... Honestly don't remember where I bought it from. but I think that's the source of my issues, is a bad master.

I'm going to probably fix the click, throw in the brake master, and then... take it to a shop to have an alignment done and have the suspension checked. None of the usual culprits pop up for the death wobble, so I did something wrong somewhere.
