Well work on the Heep just moved to the back seat for the moment. Went to town to get supplies for cleaning the gasket surfaces and on my way home, the timing belt on my DD let go leading to a nervous 7 mile ride behind a very short tow strap. Luckily it's a Ford Zetec engine so a broken timing belt doesn't cause it to self-destruct.

Examined the rear coolant temp sensor from my 95 over the weekend. Found that the wire had pulled out of it. That's why I was blissfully unaware of the engine beginning to meltdown.

Took the head from the '95 and dropped it off at the machine shop. Here's hoping...

Default Tunes!

Today, I took a stroll through the JY and found a factory cassette radio with mounting bracket. It looked rough, but I plugged it in and it worked fine, so I cleaned it up and popped it in. Much better fit than the aftermarket radio with a broken plastic mounting bracket.

I know I shouldn't be buying stuff for it until I find out about the head, but I couldn't pass this one up!

Yet another problem for #2: The turn signals don't work. 4-ways do but regular turn signals do not.

Default "Presents" from previous owners

Bought the '95 for $500, so there were issues I was aware of. The items below I discovered later...
- Screwed up stereo install. PO had to disconnect the neg battery cable if he wasn't going to be using driving it for a few days or more to keep the battery from going dead. Problem went away when I yanked out the stereo.
- 6x9s hacked into the liftgate with drywall screws. Holes through the plastic and underlying fiberglass were stripped, so they were just held in by habit. The stick that holds the liftgate open slipped one day and shot one of the speakers into the rear seatback when it slammed shut.
- Remnants of someone's attempt at fog/driving lights under the front bumper.
- Hacked in trailer light wiring that didn't work. They ran to an oddball 8-pin rectangular trailer plug.
- PDC sprayed with WD40. Under-dash fuse box full of too-large fuses and various jumpers.
- Someone had attempted to wire in aftermarket power lock actuators. The front passenger door actuator was seized up, keeping the locks from locking. Drivers door lock rod hacked up enough that it doesn't work too well either. Rears aren't much better.
- Shift boot the only thing holding the center console down.
- Missing fan shroud and radiator electric fan assembly.
- Valve cover bolts finger tight, if that.
- Worn spark plugs. Distributor cap full of carbon tracks with a worn down center contact. Hole worn through the center contact of the rotor.
- Right rear axle oil seal blown out.
- Weird vent in the center of the dash broken off and assorted holes and cuts in the dash trim.

- Left in the back was a broken snow brush, some old windshield wipers, a trailer ball and a valve cover and manifold gasket set that I think is for a Renix engine.

Just got the news on the '95's head. One bad valve guide and the exhaust seats are shot. 0.01 warp. Unfortunately there's a crack between #3 and #4 going into the water jacket.

Pondering where to go from here...

Retrieved what was left of the head for the '95 from the machine shop.

Took the studded tires off the '99 today. My summer tires aren't ready yet though. Gotta pressure wash the mud out of them and have them balanced, and that won't happen until payday. To get by, I stole the wheels off the '95. They're the base small ones (P215/75R15) and kinda crusty ugly, but they'll work for now!

The '95 is sitting on cinder blocks in the front, one old snow tire and the donut in the rear.

Discovered one of my summer tires for my '99 had a damaged sidewall and irreparable. Since they are old oddball Sam's Club Special tires with a fair amount of use on them, there's no hope of finding a matching replacement, so it's getting all new tires. The little tires are killing my range and gas mileage, so I put two of the old tires back in the rear, and put two of the '95 tires back on the front of the '95, so it's not sitting on cinder blocks anymore. Bit of a mismatch on the '99, but it's not really 4wd season anyway.

Default Spring-ish cleaning

06-22-2014

Popped a tape of random mid-90s alternative into the tape player and cleaned underneath the center console. Found $3.42 in sticky change.

Got the console reassembled. The top cover seems loose, but at least the whole thing doesn't wiggle when moving the gearshift.

Pulled the cruise control servo out of the '99. Stole the vacuum port cap from the this one to cap the hole. Hope to get a new servo ordered this week.

I pulled the trouble codes and did a little scraping on the engine deck. Figured out how to make the mirror remote levers fit the plastic trim pieces, and put them together.

Also put the vacuum port cap back.

Enough with the old business, now on to current stuff.

Last night, I did some decluttering under the hood. Removed lower radiator hose, AC condenser, and the last of the coolant lines. The last remnant of the AC system left is the evaporator. Also removed a shorted out tank heater that the P/O had installed, which might have the source of some of a few of the numerous coolant leaks. Considered taking the radiator out, but after looking at the various hardware holding it in, I decided I'll wait until I get a new radiator and move it all straight over.

Ordered a set of head bolts. Don't trust the old ones. They say they can be reused only once. I don't know if they had been reused, but when the head gasket started leaking, the PO would just pull the valve cover, crank the head bolts a little tighter, than keep driving.
