I suppose, but I still wouldn't want to give up parts that I already have for an obvious downgrade. Even if chances are small.

Didnt say they weren't interchangeable, just said my OEM stuff is better than a swapped in LP axle. And in all reality you don't gain much by swapping to a 3.73 gear. Not much different from stock.

In all reality he would save alot of money by doing that, go to the JY and find a V8 zj, get the axle for 100$ (or around there, here they go for 75$ and under) or less and then swap over the shafts if he wants. Sure he would have a LP axle, but with the money he saved he could buy chromoly shafts or maybe a lockright. After all is said and done he could have a LP dana 30 with the correct gears AND chromos or Locker
. Which to me would be better then spending several hundred on gears and ending up with the same stock axle with slightly lower gears

even in 2wd, his front drive shaft will still turn. it's turning because of the gears in the axle, not the chain in the t-case.
so no, i wouldn't risk running in 2wd with the front drive shaft in place with different gear ratios.
unless you want to prove me wrong...

Just pull the front drive shaft and run it till you get the front gears. And yes I have seen a ring and pinion grenade before the axles or the u joints. It's all in how the torque is transmitted through the axle.
