It's still working at least. Spend any more time at the beach and it will probably fail too. Good thing the replacements are cheap.

Electric Fan Installed.

I ordered
THIS THIS
fan from Amazon.

It looks like this.

I took off my old mechanical fan.

I removed the bolts for the compressor, and bolts to take off the clutch fan bracket. Broke one of the compressor bolts, 3 will have to do.

It took hours to heat, pound, cuss, and more beating with a big hammer to get the mechanical fan bearing out, but it did finally pop out. At this point there is no going back to the mechanical fan, that stuff I removed is busted up good.

Using a Dremel (which I caught on fire later today), I hacked up the old fan shroud and pieced together one that would work. In the 2001 model the shroud is smaller than the 16" and probably the 15" electric fans, so use some Geometry and draw some templates. I have a pretty steady hand, so I just guestimated and cut out the shround my way.

Here is the hack job on the driver side of the electric fan shroud.

Here is the bottom portion still waiting for some cleanup.

Here is the clearances from the engine. Plenty of room.

This is what caused my Dremel to burst into flame. I had to carve out a chunk of bracket from the alternator to fit the smaller belt.

Seriously, measure the belt length 5-6 times before you go out and buy one. I must have gone back to Autozone 5 times to get a different belt. They didn't have the belt on the Australian dudes go Jeep links, so I had to improvise. I ended up with a Duralast 800k6 @ 2030mm outside diameter. Just make sure you measure the belt unlike me. I do live less than 2 miles from an Autozone though.

****! I forgot to change to that newer thermostat. Oh well maybe tomorrow.

Anyway, gave the fan a good twirl by hand to make sure it was clear. I hooked up the wiring kit that came with the fan... it was pretty straight forward except for the ignition source. For that I vampire tapped the 12v wire that goes to the cigarette lighter. I connected up the battery.

The probe installs in the radiator fins, and I'll have to go back and secure it a bit better.

Tested the setup in my garage. It's about 88* in there with a couple box fans running. Started up fine, and temp went up to 208 when the electric fan kicked on. I let it sit there at idle for 15 min, and it stayed pretty steady. Turned on the AC and temp rose to 210, and the OEM auxilliary fan kicked on. Let it idle for 15 minutes, and the temps stayed pretty steady.

Probably be a while before I take it on a long trip, but if I change that thermostat in the morning, perhaps I'll drive the Jeep to work.

While I was in there finally got around to installing the Zone Offroad differential guards. Been sitting in box for a few weeks. Here they are.

Swapped the Thermostat and broke the bottom piece off the water outlet. Had to replace that, but it was in stock at Autozone and cheap.

Found that the serpentine belt 810k6 2055mm is just too long. I swapped it for a 800k6 and tightened that biotch up so I could barely twist it. Now no squeal, and the voltage with full load of fans, lights, ac, etc stays above ~12 v idle, and 12.5v-13.7v while rpm move from 1000-2500.

Test drove and temps are staying 210-215 /w A/C, and it was close to 100*F today.

Noticed a strange noise coming from the front end, so after the test drive I inspected all the steering, suspension, and brake components. Found that the passenger side caliper was missing a bolt, and that the other one was hanging on by a thread. Kinda freaked out, so time to do a full inspection on all driveline components.

Actually, F that. I'm done with the Jeep for the week. Maybe Sunday. I'm gonna go get some R&R.

Ordered THIS, it arrived over the weekend in the mail.

Bought a XJ front driveshaft off ebay.

Measured, taped, started the Jeep, put it in reverse, and cut off my output shaft.

Drilled and tapped with the supplied bits. I used a 3/16 bit to start the hole. Was pretty easy after I lapped a dimple in the cut end while the TC was in Reverse. Oh, it's isn't laser sighted dead on straight, but that thing ain't going anywhere. See below.

Had to run to Home Depot to get some 5/16-24 1.5" bolts to mount to the adapter.

To get the driveshaft mounted I had to droop the rear axle a bit. I had measured and thought I was within tolerances, but it sure looks like that drive shaft is a bit squished.

Post up if you think this is a problem. I am not opposed to adding some lift shackles to resolve any, "oh my gawd your going to die!" problems.

Removed my TC drop! The test drive was just fine. I can use my rear view mirror on the Interstate, which I just assumed was from the knobby tires. Also no vibes during deceleration. Also, there are no torque specs, so I just gave it half past grunt.

Chopped off some more of the Yoke and Shaft to allow the drive shaft to expand a bit.

Now the gap for the slip point looks like this.

Dude, this is an awesome jeep build. I really want to do the disc brake conversion. Do you think you could pm me with more details, advice, and the like?

Thanks

I had some heat soak problems with my warm start cycle this weekend. It was a hot and humid day, with the heat index over 100*.

Ran some errands around noon, and when I came back to start the Jeep about 30min later I had a hard time starting it, and when it did start the idle was really rough. Had to gently rev it a few times, then after about 30 seconds the idle smoothed out. I was able to drive it home and let that baby chill out.

Took the Maxima to Autozone and bought some of this stuff.

Wrapped each injector with about a 8" strip. It has some tape like properties, but I am betting on the foil to hold it's shape in place.

All injectors are wrapped, and so far it seems to have cured it.

Also while I was letting it heat up in the garage I noticed my procomp e fan conversion was not switching on at 200*. This concerns me greatly, so I disconnected all the leads. Tested the fan and it works. Then I test the temperature sensor, it works. Finally test the relay and it's dead.

Another trip to autozone, and $11 later I have a working relay. Fan kicks on around 200* as expected. All I can say is that the OEM fan must be pretty powerful, because that alone was cooling my engine in 100*+ days. I had been driving the Jeep all week!

Default Fixed a few small problems

Tired of my tail gate lift supports popping off and clocking me on the head.

Here is the culprit.

So I took it off and drilled it out.

Then I bolted on one that was a bit more stout, and wouldn't jiggle out of the support flange.

Now no more getting clocked in the head.

Crick Crack Pop!@@!@ Freaking drivers door every time I open / close it.

So I hammered out the pin, and inserted a bolt.

Now it only pops once.

That's just plain old Rustoleam Rust Reformer in Metallic Black.

I have been asked twice if the rims are powder coated from a shop somewhere. Haha, they took less than 30min to spray paint and look great!
