2000 XJ DD, Mild EXPO Trip Rig
Well just got back from a 2000 mile road trip to kansas...
Leand a few things. First those guys claiming 85 on the freeway on 35 + tires and large lifts are full of **** or don't live where there are hills.
But other then that good trip. Some pics...

Soo many bugs sounded like it was raining but it was just the cherokee hitting bugs....

I dont rock crawl I have no desire to I just need a reliable rig that wont leave me on a dirt road in the back country, and has the ability to cruise crossed country at 85mph on road.
The XJ is the perfect size for me the dogs and the girl but it shakes like a boken POS on the freeway, has issues pulling any hill at speed. and is just not what I need.
Currie steering is on and installed so its better but the lack or real power may still cause this thing to go by by.
Lots of mony has gone in to making it right and each fix opens a new issue.

There are plenty of rigs that in stock form can be comfy at 85mph, and work just fine for moderate wheeling... stock V8 WJ's and 4-Runners come to mind.
Folks that say putting larger tires on a rig will have no effect on power are on crack. Even when stock the XJ is geared too long to run in the mountains and thin air. Keep in mind Phoenix typically has a corrected altitude of around 3500-4500 feet (subtract an easy 30hp from a rig that runs at sea level). Now run your rig up in the 6000-7500 foot mountains and the engine is simply starving for air, combine larger tires and it feels like we are running an itty bitty 4 cylinder.
The only way to make the rig work right is to run deep gears, and look at runnig a full exhaust (header, down-pipe, new cat and cat back, simply adding a cat back will do nothing more than a couple hp and noise.) and aftermarket intake track.
There's no way around it.
When I ran 4.56's and 31's, I could head to Flag/Molligon and never have to leave 5th gear. I'm now running skinny 33's and and that tiny difference has made me grab 4th, or deal with the loss of speed on steep hills. Keep in mind I drive the speed limit... trying to cruise at 10mph over would be even more frustrating.
The majority of XJ owners get along happily with compromised rigs. You and I seem to be alike in that we wish the rig to be dang near perfect on the pavement... yet capable offroad... unfortuantely, that takes a host or aftermarket parts, which runs up the $ invested rather easily.
XJ's are great rig's, but if pavement performance is of utmost importance, and your wheeling is forest service roads, and the occasional unimproved road, then there are many rigs that will better suit your needs...
That is why I love me V8(H.O.) WJ. It's eats up miles of highway and leaves you fresh, and they are no slouch when the going gets a little complicated off road.
Good luck.
