That has always been the law. Anything raised or lowered over 6 inches requires written approval. I've never heard of it being enforced though.

I thought I had seen it before. As long as you don't get too stupid with lift height they shouldn't bother you. Like 1'+...

I said the law had been out for a little while, not sure when it come it out. I do not remember going over it when I got my inspection license back in the late 90's. I did hear about it when I went through law enforcement school a few years ago but it was not a big deal made over it unless, that vehicle was in a wrack. That was a charge they could hit you with. But, the last time I got my Jeep inspected, which was by a friend with a lifted vehicle, he told me they were stressing it more to them. Also, the Troopers that I have talked to about it have told me that they were being told to enforce the law more. They did say that they were only looking for what looked like overly high lifted vehicles. Like a small vehicle with a real tall tire look. I have not asked them how they determine how much lift it has. I am sure I will be seeing at least one while I am working tonight or tomorrow. I am one of the lucky one that has to work on Christmas. I will try to remember to ask one of them. With that being said I hope everyone on here has a Good And Merry Christmas. Be safe.

The beach permits are stickers that go on the windshield. Generally the plates are from a club membership. Not sure whose a green one would be.

I am a North Carolina state inspector as well. Took the class about 1 year ago an nothing was said nor did I read or see anything about excessive lift on vehicles. I'm also the only inspector at my station here in Raleigh so I dot have any one else to ask but DMV... Also just bought a RC 3 inch for my 94 xj and I love driving on the beaches here. I'm not looking for any major mud holes but anyone know of any decent fun trails to test out the new lift on? I live near Crabtree valley mall in north Raleigh.

*Edit- will post pic when lift is installed

I know a guy that runs a welding company. Has a gigantic ford on like 54's. He wrote in and got a letter from a state trooper that said as long as you dont hit stoplights your okay haha. North carolina is a good ol boy state, ive gotten more waves from cops because they like my lifted doorless jeep than anything. Normally those cops that cause trouble arent from nc haha.
