Yea I was thinking that also because its lightweight, pretty strong and you can buy 90 degree elbows. You think it should be secured to the rain gutter, the stock mounting lugs or both ?

People do it both ways, distributes weight better then just the racks... Check out the fab section. There's atleast 100 threads about them, and they are all similar, but different at the Same time.

After the roll, the gutters took a beating and the front tube was bent down from the lights, I cut off the mounts, stood on the tube to straighten it and made up new mounts. This is the best shot I have of it. Hi-lift and shovel with a basket for gear up front.
Ironically, this was the day before the rollover.

Other than the rollover, I had no trouble with mine. I made mine out of 1" and 5/8" tube with no bends, all straight cuts, 45s, and a drop at the rear. Some expanded metal on the front, and 6 gutter mounts I made up at work. It started out as just a tire carrier only 40" then morphed into the entire top. The halo on my cage weights more than the rack and tire ever did, but I only had a 33x10.5 on alloy on top. The 35s weight quite more.

These guys would know. At the junk yard I found 4 brackets for a ford e250 van for the pipe rack on top. I was going to try to use those. They have plates on the bottom that clamp together and they are about 6 inches high. I could cut them down and bend them .. I'm sure they'd work and its inexpensive
