It's a hard lesson most of us learn. When you say 'keep up' with the Bronco, what sort of terrain are you talking? Most people on this site will tell you 6.5" of lift is never necessary on a Cherokee (and I'm inclined to agree), but there's nothing wrong with it if you simply want to do it. Be aware, though, that anything above 4.5" will start to get expensive quickly.
I ran 33s under a 3.5" lift with minimal trimming, and I've seen 37s run on stock springs with more serious cutting involved. Here's my old XJ:
That's was a great looking xj! Yeah, my old tj way back in the day had a 6.5" lift and sat on 35s. I loved the height and the look. I'm a bit older now and maybe don't need it, but its a look and feel i do miss. And trust me when i say i NEVER needed it...but I liked it.

Nice TJ! I'm running a '93 YJ now, after owning an '01 XJ and an '88 Comanche. Between my Jeep, my '79 F150, and my '91 Camaro, I don't have time to fix up the '78 Kawasaki

Sounds like you've got the right mindset. I actually haven't done gears yet on any of mine. The XJ did a couple barrel rolls before I got to that point, and I'm waiting til I have stronger axles under the YJ before I invest in gears.
I agree with what tim says. The most i'd ever say a XJ be lifted is 5.5" i plan on running 35s with only 4" of lift. Bumpstops are your friend.
Good chart. According to that I need brake lines....and a track bar, which I just need to put on now. Along with every other damn part i have stock piled in my room.

A pair of Rubicon Express Super-Ride Lower Control Arms (RE3705) - Bushings show age cracking in the rubber, but joints are firm and tight. Need a coat of paint.
Measure 16" eye to eye - good for 2-3.5" of lift. $80 obo
Rancho Steering Stabilizer - seems to work ok, no leaks, bushings are good, needs paint. Free to good home.
Rusty's HD Tie Rod - tie rod ends are shot, bar is straight. Could use some paint. 1.5"x0.25 DOM - $40 obo

and good god people are dumb....i travel a bunch of back road hills on my way to work - you would not believe the amount of people stuck trying to make it up snow covered hills on summer tires
Im out of town just like Aaron so itll be a while on both of us I imagine. Ive seen vehicles in 2 foot deep snow on summer tires up in MA. It doesnt really phase us. lol
