Your just.missing the inspection cover. Someone had it off, probably to tighten the torque converter bolts and didn't feel like wrestling it back into place. I know mine put up a helluva fight coming out and going back in. Just grab one and the bolts next time your at the junkyard.

I am sure I can swing by if Rob is home or at work. I looked up the shape of the part and will have to look tomorrow if mine has been turned or if part is missing.
This XJ is just one thing after another at this point.

I didn't catch that, I'm on my phone. It would also explain why the inspection cover is missing as it wouldn't have a hope of fitting.

He might be able to get away with unbolting the transmission and wiggling it back enough so the plate can be rotated back into position.
Personally I'd grab an inspection plate and just trim it to fit the opening, but I'm a bit of a redneck like that.
