had similar weirdness a few months back. spent days on google leading me to think for sure it had to be cps or cks. asked my mech to daily drive it until it did it again. a week later it finally threw a code for him...d/s o2 sensor.
not sure if that's related to your issues at all...maybe worth checking out.

That one would just randomly stall.
In my case there are several, seemingly, non-related issues.
1) Sluggish cranking / no start
Battery is new about 6 months and FULLY CHARGED. Sluggish cranking would point to the starter.
2) Loss of heat
Now in the ZJ's with the Automatic Temperature Control the system is 100% electronic according to the FSM. There are no manual levers or vacuum operated mechanisms.
3) Idle Issues
Several powered components come into play here including the fuel pump, injectors and IACV
Now I had none of these problems 4 days ago, and all three problems manifested themselves at the same time. Even though they are unrelated systems operationally, they are related in that they all run off the same power source.
Now onto more info that points to battery cables/connections.....
I did things in this order .....
1) The ZJ was sitting, cranking was sluggish.
2) Used some material so that I could tighten up the clamps tighter over the cables.
3) Key in ignition and cranking was much much better and the ZJ started. Idle was a bit flaky, so I did several start/run/restart cycles.
4) Drove the ZJ from Bel Air to BWI Airport and back. Parked and shut down. Waited 5 minutes to do a restart and it was fine.
5) One hour later I did another restart and it is fine.
It makes sense when you consider the several 'unrelated' issues that popped u[ at the same time.
I didn't come to this conclusion on my own, I talked to a friend who owns a service center and he kept saying 'electrical'. He said to remove the cables from the starter and clean them, the starter terminals and reinstall the cables.
I took what he said to heart but recalled the other issues and looked harder at the aftermarket terminals the PO installed. When the PO installed them he cut the cables shortening them probably by 1" to 1 1/2" and this caused stress at the terminals because they are a tad too short. To confirm this I set my other 98 ZJ side by side to the problem one and compared the cables.
Hopefully tomorrow I will have better cables installed, if not then I will have to add " snug the terminals on top of the battery " as a daily check.
