You could wire two speakers to one channel but I doubt the head deck could handle the lower impedance.

Should work but it won't gain you power. If your head deck puts out 22 watts x 4 at 4 ohm. All you will accomplish is having that 22 watts sent to 2 speakers instead of 1. If you want to increase volume cheaply buy a 2 channel amp and bridge your front to your rears. Make sure the amp can handle 2 ohms, most can. You can get an amp for cheap too. Doesn't have to be a competition amp.
