Looking to join PA Jeep crew

Hey new guy here looking for a cherokee xj hoping I can get some opinions from some locals. I came across a really clean 98 2dr manual with 98k miles, now I haven't seen it in person yet but I plan to in the next few days. Its lightly modified 2" lift, 33" tires, roof rack. Its hard to go by book value on something like this but how do you know you're getting a fair deal? The guy is asking 8k which sounds crazy high to me, just looking for some friendly advice so I'm not getting ripped off :thumbup1:

Yep sounds high. Is it 4WD or 2WD?

Jeeps do have a 'rarity tax'.
-really clean
-no rust/ any rust, condition of under carriage
-2 door
-5 speed manual
-98k miles
-extras-- 33"tires, rims, roof rack
-exterior/interior color
-'the look' Does it look good just sitting there?

So if you start at $3000 and add for what it is and has, +$500 really clean, +$500 2 door, +$500 5 speed, +$500 under 100k miles, +500 tires/rims/roof rack.

Is it a PA car and have current inspection and emissions?
What does it need now? battery, brakes, A/C charge?
What factory extras/options? fog lights, overhead console, gauge instrument panel, cruise control, power windows/doors/mirrors, tow hitch.

+$500-$1000 if you 'really-really' want it.

If you can buy it now, get in it and enjoy it and be proud of it and proud driving it, then I'd offer $5500-$6000, $7000 if you 'really-really' want it.

Post a picture of it.

Its 4wd, green, looks decent for its age no dents or anything a little paint wear and fender flares are missing. I was kinda thinking 5500-6000 range myself for a really good one just wanted some advice jeeps are completely new to me.

Hey man welcome to the North Atlantic sub forums!

Here is the link for the PA cherokee club:

When you get your jeep, post it up there.

As for as 8K for Cherokee, no way i would be pay that much. CobraMarty is right. They do have rarity taxes. Some Jeeps depending on rarity, have a sub-market where KBB values don't apply.

I would say if the 2-door and manual transmission are not must have specs for you, move on to something else. Those two specs will add quite a "rarity" tax. The standard run of the mill XJ will be outfitted with a AW4 auto-transmission, will have 4 doors and will be a hell of a lot cheaper.

That being said, I watched craigslist for about 12 months before i bought mine. From what I noticed you will have the guys that will post up an XJ and want an arm and leg for it. Then you will find a few days later, someone will post an XJ with similar specs and a way more modest price. This logic doesnt really apply to the XJ your looking at because of its rarities. However, if you start looking at 4 door autos you will find a lot more options that are priced more in the realm of sanity.

let us know how its goes!

I did find a few reasonable priced decent condition autos but manual is a must have for me I'll pay up for it, 2 doors I could care less I'd actually prefer 4 I just saw this one and it looked clean for its age. I keep looking around see what pops up, used car shopping is more painful than new car shopping by far. Thanks guys.

Ok sounds good, it can be a painful process. It all worth it though.
