Default Legal lift height in Maryland

Hey folks,

New here and have a few questions. I did search but didn't find anything with my criteria.

I live in Baltimore MD and own a stock 2000 sport, plan on lifting her in the spring after getting all my parts this winter. My question is what is the frame/bumper height of your cherokee running a rough county 6.5 with 33s.

I want to make sure i'm still legal height wise with this setup. For those curious I do plan on going off road once this is complete. I like the look of this combo also.

Anyway thanks in advance and glad to have found this place, been reading like crazy.

Shawn, I do not know the answer to your question about the rules in Maryland that govern vehicle modifications, but you may try calling Mike Bosley who owns and operates Appalachian Offroad Inc. in Westminster, Maryland. Mike's phone # is 410-848-2942 or his E-mail is info@appalachianoffroad.com
i feel certain that Mike will know the DMV rules for vehicle lifts. I hope you can make it to the York, Pennsylvania Fairgrounds on July 16 and 17 for the ALL JEEP SHOW. Mike will have a display there at the Jeep Show next weekend.

I'm at 4.5" and roll on 32's and have never been bothered by the police regarding the height of my XJ. If your tires stick out past the flares then they will use that as a reason to mess with you though

I plan on adding flares when I do this. I may just go with a 4.5 lift and trim to fit 33x12.5s.

Thanks for that info, I will check with them once I get closer to doing this, have to buy the wife a new car first. I needed someone to do the install anyway so this helps.

Mike did the lift install on my XJ, great guy. Went above and beyond the call of duty.

Depending on the cop, 28 inches from the bottom of the "frame" rail is the current rule.

I didn't see Mike Bosley at the York PA Jeep Show this past weekend. If I understood him correctly, I was under the impression that he would be "setting up" a canopy and open for business.

Of course, the legal height criteria for Maryland also applies equally to out of state visitors who are driving on Md. roadways.

There were a number of "no doors" citations issued to show visitors this past week end. The penalty was $110.00 on the citation I was shown by a Jeeper from Harford County, Md.

As well as the "28" lift height rule", I was at the grocery store and was chatting up a local cop...

I asked about lights.
His answer: "Maryland says no more than 4 lights hooked up. That means 2 aux and 2 driving..." "You can have more mounted, but not hooked up/functional, even if they have covers on them".
BUT he also said," if you use quick disconnects or even a out of sight kill switch so i cant see them working when i say flip it, then we dont care"
Just thought I would share that FYI

I wonder if that officer would allow you an opportunity to do a quick all around tire deflation if stopped by him in order to meet the Maryland 28" height restriction ?

If it were me, I would a least suggest it to him in a friendly way.

Lol, I didn't even think of that.. I dont have that problem, but next time I see anither officer, I'll ask.

I'm sure he would say, if you can do it in x amount of time, so your not wasting his time, airing down..

As well, would depends on the officer having a good day or not

Im a cop here in town and I never mess with lifted vehicles or ones with extended tires. Hell, my Grand Cherokee has lift and its tires stick out 4" from the body! Im making temporary flares just so I can pass inspection and then remove them.

Officer, if the Maryland DMV rule for lifted vehicles is in fact a maximum of 28 inches from the ground to the bottom of the frame, I would have to suggest that is quite liberal and fair.

I measured my stock Cherokee and 28 inches was at the middle of the rubber door moulding.
