Seasonal roads near Traverse City
So I was gonna go out to Hoosier Valley (seasonal roads out by chums corners) and have some fun because all the rain must've made for some awesome off roading. Just before I could get around to doing anything a cop pulled me over and told me there was trouble back there with people tearing the roads up. He also said it was illegal to do anything "destructive" including driving through puddles or anything faster than 10-15 miles per hour.I was respectful and didn't want any trouble so I just let him know that I was gonna leave. Rather disappointing day. So, what is legal and what isn't? Where can I go off road legally in Michigan?

it is my understanding that if it is a seasonal road, that is just like any other road, except they don't plow it in the winter. as long as you don't go off the road, I don't think there is much they can do. I am from muskegon county and I run the seasonal roads here all the time.

I used to go to Hoosier Valley all the time with my Subaru and plan on doing so with the Jeep. It's not illegal to go back there especially if you head up that hill directly in front of you when you head in. No one has homes back there and its a lot more fun.

Haha, this finally got a couple replies. Well, I know that tons of people go there all the time so I found it weird that the guy said I couldn't. Since posting this I've been going out to "the 80's" a lot. Never had problems out there yet I have heard that it is illegal (most of it is powerline maintenance roads ie electric company private property.) Many times out there though I've seen maintenance workers and asked them if it was fine, none of them ever complained. I wanna go out to Hoosier again soon if this melt keeps up. Anyone interested in coming along?

I use to live over in Kalkaska.
There is a ton of places to play between there and TC.
Sand Lake area for 1 can be fun and than there is a Power Line off of Brown Fire lane that is a LEGAL seasonal road if you go west, to the east it's not..

Can you give me some more info on the sand lake area? I know where it is but don't know what would be legal and what would not.

freeski, I'm thinking this coming weekend or the next would be good or we can definitely figure something else out, just let me know. Doesn't look like the weather is gonna be warm for a while again so I dunno. I wanna get my plates renewed first though. Should have em by Friday.
