I'm new to the whole XJ gig but sagging springs isn't, within itself, a decent candidate. Sounds more like a bushing, or a mount, or possibly the bushing in the shackle, if it's coming from the back. If it's a clunk you can feel then it's a large enough space between parts that are catching up or engaging as you accelerate. Physics of torque and all that jazz as well.
