Default SLC: 1st Jeep, 1st Car need advice

So I've been looking all over the place, and I'm still battling between TJ and XJ.
I've posted on WF for TJ, and now I'm doing the same for XJ. And I'm not here to compare Wrangler and Cherokee. Instead, I'm asking what to look for, and price wise what is consider a good deal and such, since price on a wrangler got jacked a few grand up for the same engine type and milage.

At the very beginning I was filtering out everything over 130K miles, but some jeep owners told me that's not necessary, the motor lasts. So I started to be accepting high miles again.

($2800 for a 170K?)http://www.ksl.com/auto/listing/782682?ad_cid=6

(200K, too much over the top?)http://www.ksl.com/auto/listing/782487?ad_cid=8

(Lifted, and a little pricy, but lower miles) http://www.ksl.com/auto/listing/778703?ad_cid=12

let me know what yall think... any advice is much appreciated.

I like that red one from midvale, but if you wheel it at all you'll rub and it is a little $$$$

The $2800 one... offer the seller $2000 cash and see what happens? From the pictures it looks pretty clean, make sure to check under the hood and by the fusebox for any obvious hacked wiring. The messed up wiring is my main thing to fix on my white one right now.

I picked up my white 96 w/ 5.5" lift and 32's for $2000. Body has 194K miles on it and rebuilt engine has almost 30K miles on it. Guy was asking $2800 for it. I looked at it, called him back the next day and just kinda played it down a little. He said I can work on the price, I offered $2000. Done Deal.

I'd keep looking. I'm not sure what years you'd like to keep in, but there are some nice ones cruising around for sale that pop up on KSL all the time. I just saw one on there that I wish I could get.

Yes I will wheel it, that's why I need a 4x4, and it's giong to be my DD too.
So I don't know how much the lift will affect that. What do you mean "you'll rub"? I have to work on it? How much would you offer for the red one?

Can you link me to the one you saw you wish you'd get?

Thanks a lot bro..

I'm at work right now. I'll look for it when I get home. not sure on the red one. it looks clean but I couldn't fairly say anything unless I saw it in person.

So I went to checked out the 2.8k White one. it's kept pretty clean.
AC blows cold, one of the front speakers is off, but he told me it worked, but his wife messed with the stereo setting, and he doesn't know how to change it.

2 small rust spots on the trunk door. some black paint is peeling on the frame of the window. I used the method online to test 4x4 (one a gravel, put in 4Hi/Lo brake on the floor, give gas at the same time ) When driving over 50m/h, there is some wind blowing noise from the driver's side, but just small noises, not loud enough to distract you. Other than that, it drives smooth. Odometer says 174K +. And that's pretty much about the Jeep itself.

Now the climax of the show:
When I ask him about the tire size, he said he didn't know. it looks a littler bigger than the stock 235/75/15, to me. Then, the guy told me he bought it from someone else just a few weeks ago, but he is too big to fit in the driver's seat. He asked for $2800, and he told me he bought it a few weeks back for $3300, trying to convince me that's already a fair price.

And then I ask to look at the VIN, and registration, he told me to go ahead and grab it in the glove box. Guess what I found? A bill of sale says somebody, presumably him, paid $2500 for a 1998 Sport Cherokee !!!

Of course, I didn't point it out, coz that'll be too awkward. but just pretend nothing happened. So at the end of the test drive, I told him i'll give a yes for 2000, he said no way. After a bit of tennis balling, I said 2.2 or 2.3K is my upper limit. He said he has to discuss with wife..and let me know tonight...End of the story.

What do you think?

Add:
there are also rusts, and white stuff on the battery terminal. The coolant level is getting closer to the "mini", but that's not so important I guess.

I'd go for one that is Stock. 99's are the best year for Xj's.

There are plenty of Guys from SLC here on the board one of us would probably be able to meet up and look at an Xj with you since we know what to look for already.

Also don't pay more then 3k for an Xj. I paid 3000 for my 99 2 years ago with a 3" lift and 31's with 147k

Also go onto RME4x4 (rocky moutain Extreme). They are a local to Utah forum they have a classified sections for vehicles and stuff goes pretty cheap and quick on here currently there is an Xj for 2300
