Hey Steph, if you could post up a pic showing us where your talking about I'm sure we could help you figure out whether you have a problem or not, and with luck how to fix it.

makes sense.... I tried to put a red arrow where it has the play. (it is not at the joint)
Please don;t tell me that I have a problem..... haha.... or at least say that this is a problem that I can live with for a while

How does it feel is it a lot of play? Can you feel the play while driving it? If its A LOT of play then I'd say that the splines are way worn out but alittle play is normal over time!

Steph, its most likely a little wear in your splines if you don't have a lot of play in your steering wheel. If you do have play in your wheel (anymore than about 2" (1" in either direction) before your front tires start to move) you might have a worn out steering gearbox. I've read about guys adjusting them, but I personally don't have any experience with it. Perhaps someone else here does and will chime in.

Oh well thanks guys I will just ignore that for now lol..... no seriously I have read a bit about that and even though I am not sure what "a lot" or a "little" play would be, I think it is a little play. I can turn the wheel probably close to an inch (or so) without changing direction....
Finally got some info from my dad.... this is what I want to do at some point......

this jeep always made me dream when I was a kid and watching a patrol of 6 soldiers taking it out of crate and building it in a couple of hours

steph74 it is old if you were to change out all the steering and the box then it would be good. but personally i don't see any point in doing that right now for just a little play.
just drive with two hands on the wheel.

Thanks guys....I put everything back together and will consider that I am good to go for now. Changing all that stuff will be on the list of things that I will learn to do later haha....
Much much better ride with the new shocks..... it is crazy how these things can make a difference lol.
So I think now the next thing is changing that U-joint and with the cool write up that is in the forum it will be not too difficult.
