went to start my jeep today and it wouldn't start, just made one click everytime i turned the key. i connected the power and ground on the starter and it would just spin the starter. but after a couple more tries it started up. does that mean the starter is bad or going bad? or maybe my wires came loose too much

1) If you power just the power and ground, all that should happen is spinning the starter. The solenoid to push the gear up to the fly wheel has to also be activated for it to turn the flywheel and start the engine.
2) The starters I have had go out often have a "hot spot" where if the shaft stops in a certain place it is siezed and won't start, causing spurratic performance.
3) This can often be a symptom of corrosion - a bunch of the nasty white stuff causing enough resistance to make it so the starter has voltage, but insufficient current. This also tends to cause spurratic performance.
I would start with cleaning up the connections - namely both battery posts and clamps that the connections on the starter also getting them nice and tight, and see if problems persist. That is more common than the starter going out in my limited experience. If the problem remains, it may be starter time.

If you hit the starter with direct power & it just spun but didn't turn the motor ur starter is going out. Was the power from ur jeeps battery or jumped from another car?

Depends...when you say you hooked the power and ground to the starter, was that going direct from the battery? And was it just power and ground? And was the starter still installed on the jeep for that test?

so i cleaned the contact points on the starter. and it has started with the key every time i try other than the first time after cleaning them. hmm i still wonder if the starter is going out though. also the steering gear box is pulled.
i don't have enough muscles to put in the new one
